Veena’s review of Silver Lady by Mary Jo Putney
Historical Romance published by Kensington 28 Nov 23

Certain gifts can be dangerous indeed. Bran Tremanyne was abandoned by his biological family when he began to exhibit certain paranormal gifts. Saved by another similarly gifted young boy, the two are found and adopted by the Tremaynes, who are gifted themselves and seek to save other gifted ones. What is it that pulls him back to his birthplace, now all grown up and successful?

Bran, now a Tremayne and a renowned agent for the crown, returns to Cornwall when he finds that his father is seeking to reinstate him as the heir to the family title. His gift tells him that he has another reason to go to Cornwall.  Here, he meets and rescues Merryn, who has been kidnapped and subjected to memory blocks that prevent her from remembering who she is and what she is capable of.

As the story unfolds, it seems that more than Merryn, his silver lady, has called him back to Cornwall. With his brother’s and sister’s help, he will have to peel back the layers of a dastardly plot that will create havoc in the English forces and might even cause the English to lose the war against the French.

Smugglers, plots and counterplots, and assassination attempts are all in play, as Bran and Merryn join a team of other gifted ones. Their teamwork and intuition foil a plot to save the day.  It’s how it all comes together that makes this such a compelling read.

An excellent romance with its paranormal elements and thread of romance. I can’t wait to see some of the other characters find their HEA as the series continues.

Grade: A

Summary:

Together they faced the past . . .

A sense of duty sends Bran Tremayne to Cornwall to confront his heritage of British nobility. Abandoned at birth, Bran wants nothing to do with the embittered remains of his family. But as a special agent for the Home Office, he senses trouble brewing along the coast. And he can’t turn away from the vulnerable woman he encounters in the Cornish countryside. Merryn’s amnesia makes her past a mystery to them both, but with her life in danger, the only thing Bran knows for sure is that the beautiful stranger needs his protection . . .

But would they share a future?

Leaning into Bran is difficult enough, but can Merryn trust the strong bond—and the powerful passion—she feels for her rugged rescuer? She has no choice once Bran uncovers that she is at the center of a plot between French agents and Cornish smugglers. From misty woodlands to stormy shores, the two join forces with a band of loyal Cornishmen to bring down a common enemy. Yet will their growing love survive the coming peril?
