Sandy M’s review of The Difference Between Somebody and Someone (Difference Trilogy, Book 1) by Aly Martinez
Contemporary Romance published by Aly Martinez 27 Jan 22

Over the last number of years I’ve been looking for new authors to read. Mostly because I’ve been a tad disappointed with some of my old favorites during that time. With few exceptions, I’ve been quite successful in finding some really, really good authors to enjoy. The latest is Aly Martinez. I’ve had this trilogy in iBooks for a while now, just never getting to it for some reason. But a couple of weeks ago I had no idea what to read next. Then her books caught my eye again, and I jumped right in. A mistake or one of the best choices I’ve made in a very long while?

If you guessed a best choice, you’d be absolutely right. Any author who can draw me in within the first few sentences, the first few pages of a book is one I know I will read time after time. Ms. Martinez does that in spades. We start out in Bowen’s point of view. He’s lost the love of his life – more than once as we read along – but this time he’s lost and depressed – so much so it scares his family. Even when he meets Remi at the settlement hearing months after the one of the worst days of his life, he’s not his usual charming and warm self, though he does a good deed that for some reason knocks him for a loop.

Remy is one vivacious, outgoing, loving woman. She’s quite taken with Bowen in just minutes, even amid the turmoil of what the day will bring. She’s baffled by his behavior, but there’s not much she can do about it. Until she runs across him again and then again in places she’d never have thought to. During one of those run-ins, Bowen’s attitude has changed. He’s now flirty and fun, the handsomest man she’s ever seen.

This is just the beginning of a wonderfully lovely relationship like I haven’t read in a long time. These two are perfect together, Bowen already knowing Remi was born for him to love forever. And they do fall in love in record time. Her two best friends want her to slow down. His family is thrilled he’s coming out of his tragic funk. They both still have a lot of the past to work through, but together they can do anything.

And then what does Ms. Martinez do about three-quarters of the way through the story?? With one unbelievable twist no one ever anywhere saw coming, she flips the story upside down, sideways, on its head – you get the idea. I’m still in a state of shock when I think about that moment, even when I’m nearly through the third book in the trilogy. It’s all brilliant. I finished the book not too long after that and had to immediately start the second one.

This is one terrific trilogy. I highly recommend it. And I can’t wait to dig into Ms. Martinez’s backlist. I’m hoping for more and more of those twists and turns she’s so, so good at!

Grade: A

Summary:

The world owes you nothing.

It took losing the woman I loved and facing the paralyzing task of moving on without her for me to truly understand that.

Consumed by regret and razor-sharp memories, I’d resigned myself to a life of loneliness until a survivor from the same plane crash that took my fiancée stormed into my life.

Remi Grey was chaos and sunshine, fire and freedom. With her in my arms, I began to believe that fate had other plans for me.

But as secrets of the past exploded around us, it seemed the only thing fated about our relationship was that I had been destined to lose her from the start.

The world owes you nothing. But for Remi, I would risk it all. No matter the cost.
