Sandy M’s review of Sexy (Soulmates – Sexiness & Secrets, Book 1) by Jessika Klide
Contemporary Romance published by Jessika Klide LLC 17 Oct 14
Since I’ve had pretty good luck with new, especially indie, authors lately, I decided to take a chance on Jessika Klide. I don’t recall now exactly what led me to Sexy. I’m assuming probably because it’s the first in a series, mostly because it’s an older book. But this story definitely taught me sometimes new-to-me authors work…and sometimes they don’t.
I usually try to give a book a fighting chance, reading at least four, five, maybe six chapters. However, as I’ve learned over all my years of reviewing, time and life are too darned short to go that route every time. This time around I barely made it to the end of the first chapter. I didn’t even get to meet the hero, only got a description from afar. If an author can’t draw me in with likable and sympathetic characters immediately, the whole story doesn’t bode well for me getting to the last page.
Siri is a Las Vegas dancer, imitating celebrities that has made her a household name in the City of Sin. Okay, I can work with that. But right off the bat, way too much description of the dancing and how successful she is at it. That all can be said in a few short paragraphs so we can get on with the story.
Then there’s the horrible dialogue. Horrible. It starts off fine with the loss of Siri’s best friend leaving Vegas, but when Siri starts her shift and waits on a customer the next day, the dialogue goes downhill fast. No one I know speaks that way. And the fact Siri takes him up on a job offer with hardly any concrete info at all? Don’t care if it is the hottest place in town, she doesn’t know that for sure until she shows up to see just how legit the man is. No brains in my book.
So decision made at that point. Did I miss a good hero? Maybe. Just isn’t worth it to find out, though. Not enough to encourage me to read the other nine books in the series either. I’m not sure what all the 5-star reviewers on Amazon read, but it sure wasn’t this book.
