One White Lie Dinca’s review of One White Lie (Barrington Billionaires, Book 1) by Jeannette Winters
Contemporary Romance published by Jeannette Winters 7 Dec 15

I have a hard time reading a love story when the main characters have no respect for themselves or each other. Which is the case here.  I don’t care how good the sex is, the characters are a disaster and the story line disjointed without dialogue between them.

When I started writing this review, it was coming off as a helpline for abused women. It doesn’t matter how hard this writer tries to make Brice into a nice guy, he is still a controlling, self-centered ass. So he was abused as a child – many people have been.  He is still responsible for his own actions and still decides to be an ass. His choice. And, furthermore, he never turns into a likable character.

He can’t tell Lena he loves her, but he can screw her brains out. Yet in the end, he can go to her parents and tell them everything from his point of view and everything is going to be okay then. If I was Lena’s mother, I would’ve thrown his ass out and found a good attorney to make sure my grandson is taken care of, as well as my daughter. And his visitation would be supervised, until it’s clear that he’s not going to be an abusive parent. After all, that is all he knows. He even is worried about it in his thoughts, along with being very jealous and controlling.

Ms. Winters tries to make Lena intelligent and responsible, but never pulls it off. There is so much redundancy in the story line that it turns out wishy-washy. If she is so smart, why is she being a doormat for this guy? Great sex aside, it is not everything and she deserves better in a relationship.

If Ms. Winters had given Lena any brains at all, she would know she has the upper hand. She is so worried about a letter of recommendation so she can get a better job to support her so,n when all she has to do is tell Brice he has a son. Problem solved. She does not have to be greedy or needy about it. After all, having a child is his responsibility too. By the end of the book, I was just angry about this entire situation. And the sad part about it is there are people out there who will actually fall into traps like that. I sure hope the author isn’t one of them.

Besides the poor characters, there is little dialogue between the two and no common ground to build a relationship. There is very little to no passion between them, just sex. There could have been if the author would have allowed them to have a conversation about something other than work or having an argument. Brice could have turned into a real feeling person the night his father died, if he had told Lena he wanted to have sex and then stay afterward. But no, not even a conversation about needing to be near someone and feel alive. It would have made a big difference in the story line.

The child in the story is two years old. Brice kicked everyone out of his life to close a big project he was working on. If it took two years, his company would not survive. The whole concept is a mess in this story. There is not anything about how they got together and some loose details toward the end sound almost like they were an afterthought.

It’s a good thing this book is free on Amazon. It is a waste of time and money. I cannot recommend this book at all. The story line is so aggravating and without the lack of dialogue I mentioned, there is no coherent thought process for them to grow as a couple. If it was real life, I would give their relationship two years and another kid. I just can’t see a happily ever after here.
