sandym-icon.jpgSandy M’s review of Devlin’s Desire by Sapphire Blue
Erotic paranormal romance (eBook novella) published 2 Nov 07 by Ellora’s Cave

Blurb:

Devlin Decatur is a shape shifter who refuses to accept his heritage. He’s a millionaire playboy and nothing else. Until she enters the picture. She belongs to the same tribe that Devlin refuses to be a part of; she is the one that has come to take him back to the Gungi Rain Forest so that he can save their tribe. She is the one who makes him quiver with need.

Gabriella Kincaid is on a mission to save her people. She’s traveled far and will go to any lengths to see this mission through, even sacrifice her body. But Gabriella soon realizes that giving herself to Devlin is not a sacrifice, but a submission to the scorching heat that simmers between them.

Devlin and Gabriella find consolation in both their feline and erotic connection. But when danger threatens their lives, their distraction could prove deadly.

Reader Advisory: Contains a brief scene of male/male sexual contact.

I would have enjoyed this book more if there had been more emphasis on the shifting than the sex. I realize romantica is going to have a lot of erotic scenes, but for the length of this novella, I just think it was overdone.

Both Devlin and Gabriella are beautiful, sleek jaguars, but they’re talked about more than they’re used in the storyline. Those places where the main characters are in their feline forms are great scenes, but when they’re already getting hot and sticky by the second chapter, those great scenes are overshadowed. The majority of the sex is very erotic and even romantic, but there were a couple I could have done without that didn’t really add all that much to the story. There is one scene, however, when Devlin is in his jaguar form and Gabriella has not shifted that was quite stimulating. It definitely left me trembling.

Devlin and Gabriella are good together, both in and out of bed, and once their doubts are banished, they work as a team to save their tribe. Devlin initially wants nothing to do with the tribe, but the lure of Gabriella and other personal reasons find him agreeing to return to the place he turned his back on years ago.

The concept of the story is compelling considering their origins and I wish it had been delved into a little further. I felt the way the tribe’s problem were finally handled was too simplistic and ended a little too quickly. My first thought when I finished reading was why the author just hadn’t taken more time and written a full-length book to give it more depth. It certainly would have balanced things out if that had been the case.
