Kaitlyn‘s review of Two Twisted Crowns (Shepherd King, Book 2) by Rachel Gillig
Fantasy Romance published by Orbit 17 Oct 23
One Dark Window, Book 1 in this series, was one of my favorite books last year. The magic system of providence cards and a mystical mist infecting the kingdom made for such an interesting read. Then there was the nightmare creature living inside Elspeth’s head, slowly taking over her mind as the infection leads to her degeneration. I didn’t think the world Rachel Gillig created could get any better, but the sequel is even more amazing.
Two Twisted Crowns picks up right where ODW left off and immediately ensnared me. The first book is completely from Elspeth’s POV, but in this book we get POVs from multiple characters, and I LOVE it. Elm steals the show and the addition of the new romance with him is perfection.
I don’t want to give too much away, but this really is one of the best sequels I’ve ever read. The atmosphere of these books is so enthralling, and the spooky vibes couldn’t be more perfect for fall. If you haven’t read One Dark Window yet, you absolutely should move it to the top of your TBR.
Two Twisted Crowns is out now, and it wraps up the story so wonderfully. This duology is one of my top favorites and I can’t recommend it enough!
Summary:
Gripped by a tyrant king and in the thrall of dark magic, the kingdom is in peril. Elspeth and Ravyn have gathered most of the twelve Providence Cards, but the last—and most important—one remains to be found: the Twin Alders. If they’re going to find the card before Solstice and set free the kingdom, they will need to journey through the dangerous mist-cloaked forest. The only one who can lead them through is the monster that shares Elspeth’s head: the Nightmare.
And he’s not eager to share any longer.
