Veena’s review of The Protector (Game of Chance, Book 1) by Susan Stoker
Romantic Suspense published by Montlake 14 Mar 23
Riggs plans to spend some quality unplugged time in his remote cabin, recharging and catching up on reading. Nature has different plans for him, when he ends up befriending two strays and changing the course of his life forever.
When Riggs and his team of special operators had been captured and tortured, they promised themselves they would quit the military and retire in a remote part of the US with mundane professions, should they escape. Now he and his team have a successful lumber business in Maine, and he has a the perfect cabin in the woods that he can retire to from time to time, leaving everyone and everything behind.
In the midst of one of the worst snowstorms to hit Maine, he rescues a dog and then follows said dog to rescue a woman who is lost in the storm. The cold he’s been fighting lays him low, leaving the woman in his cabin, eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to survive. It turns out that Carlise ran from the frying pan when she escaped a stalker back home to be lost in the Maine wilderness in the midst of the worst snowstorm to hit the country. Rescued, she sets about trying to nurse the man who found her and making friends with the dog that saved her life.
The story flows really well as Carlise charms Riggs and the dog, and even makes friends with the rest of his team. Danger still stalks her, and she will have to confront and defeat the unexpected enemy in front of her, before she can settle into her happily ever after.
I do enjoy Ms. Stoker’s stories and can’t wait to see how the other members of Riggs’ team fall in love and find their HEAs.
Summary:
Riggs “Chappy” Chapman didn’t expect to be disrupted at his remote cabin in the woods. But when a stray dog arrives on his porch, he winds up finding a stray woman, too, trudging through the snowstorm in search of shelter. His military days may be behind him, but Chappy is hardwired to protect her from the storm and whatever it is she’s running from.
Carlise Edwards didn’t expect her car to break down in the Maine wilderness. All she wants is to escape whoever is stalking her back home. There’s no way anyone’s going to find her and Chappy deep in the forest, especially not in dangerous weather. But she finds it hard to mind the circumstances when the company is this stimulating.
As the snowstorm rages, Chappy and Carlise find that, despite the cold, they can generate plenty of heat of their own…but there’s more than just natural dangers lurking in the woods.
