Sandy M’s review of Beyond the Moonlit Sea by Julianne MacLean
Contemporary Romance published by Lake Union Publishing 14 Jun 22

It’s been quite a long time since I’ve read Julianne MacLean. No particular reason other than the usual too many books, too little time. So with this new release, I decided it was time to see what she’s been up to. All I can say is wow, it won’t be nearly as long as before when I next pick up another of her books. This one is an absolute winner.

Olivia and Dean are happily married, living in Florida. She works from home and he’s a pilot who loves his job. Her parents didn’t approve of Dean when they met and then married, and Olivia’s father cut her off when they tied the knot on their own. But Olivia didn’t care. She still has the love of her life three years later and everything is wonderful. Until the day Dean is called in last minute to fly a celeb to Saint Thomas. She gets over the mini argument had about the coming flight, and it’s hours later when her world comes crashing down – Dean’s plane has gone missing, there’s no sign of him or his aircraft anywhere.

Olivia goes through all the stages of grief, even that which has her exploring the impossible and improbable – how planes go missing in the Bermuda Triangle. But she has to come to grips with her loss and finally decides to move on when all searching for her husband is called off. It’s for the best, because she will, in eight or so short months, have more in her life to keep her going. It’s a few years later that she meets up again with her ex, falling in love against all odds. Their life is happy and full of love, with children in the mix.

In the midst of all this, we meet a woman named Melanie Brown. She’s spent years studying the intricacies of the Bermuda Triangle and its mysteries. The first unforeseen twist for the reader is during Melanie’s sessions with her therapist. Those twists and plenty of turns continue throughout this story, sending you reeling each time, telling you you ain’t seen nothin’ yet and have no idea what’s going on – until the end when the final twist whaps you a good one and finally all is revealed.

Pick this book up today. And be prepared to keep reading well into the night. I couldn’t read it fast enough, wanting to find out what happened and why. I can guarantee you will do and want the same.

Grade: A
