Veena’s review of Can’t Go Back (Devlin & Falco, Book 3) by Debra Webb
Romantic Suspense published by Thomas and Mercer 14 Dec 21
These types of thrill rides chockful of suspense and red herrings are my reading jam. With a grisly murder, a confession from a guy who just doesn’t smell like a killer, and a whole host of hooks leading back into Falco’s past, Ms. Webb keeps readers guessing almost till the very end.
A house fire burned a mother and a young child. The father, an undercover policeman, was away from home but returned in time to get burned trying to save his wife and child. Shortly after, he confesses to setting the fire that murdered his family. Apparently, all had not been smooth in the marriage per his mother-in-law. And his mother is one of the biggest flies in the ointment. But murder? it just doesn’t ring true for Devlin and Falco, who catch the case and are determined to find the truth.
The trail soon leads to Falco’s past, one he seems to be reluctant to share with Devlin, with whom he now has a romantic relationship. It’s such a dark past that he doesn’t seem to have quite come to terms with it himself. As the darkness rises and almost seems to engulf Falco, Devlin holds strong and supports her partner in the best way she knows how, while trying to keep them both safe and working the case.
A convoluted story emerges which will leave readers gasping. If you like a good suspense and a solid relationship, then this book is for you. I am sorry to see this series end.
Summary:
Birmingham detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco arrive at the scene of a double homicide to discover that nothing makes sense. A woman and her child are dead, and though the husband says he killed them, the evidence says otherwise. Why would a man confess to unspeakable murders he didn’t commit?
What starts as an open-and-shut case explodes into a web of new leads. Devlin and Falco get to work tracking down every single one—including a disturbing connection between the murders and Falco’s dark past.
Falco knows the incident from eight years ago will jeopardize the partnership he’s built with Devlin, both on and off the job. If he could go back, he would—but what happened happened, and there’s a murderer on the loose. Devlin and Falco must slog through the pain to get to the truth; and so far the only truth they know is that everyone is lying.
