Veena’s review of Home for a Cowboy Christmas by Donna Grant
Romantic Suspense published by St. Martin’s Press 26 Oct 21
It’s a downright nerve-wracking time for Emmy Garret with the Mafia, whom she’s set to testify against, working to kill her before she ever makes it to the courtroom. When her safe house where she’s under the protection of US Marshalls is breached, it’s clear that the Marshall’s office has a mole. Dalton, the only protector in her detail whom she trusts, whisks her away off the grid and stashes her with an old Special Forces buddy on a cattle ranch.
Dwight is no simple rancher. He’s served in the FBI and Homeland Security before coming home to run his family-owned ranch. He has the space and resources to protect Emmy and is more than willing to help Dwight keep Emmy under the radar. As he and Emmy spend time together, love begins to bloom.
Unfortunately, Emmy is not safe. The Mafia enforcer is hot on Dalton’s trail, despite all the precautions that Dalton took along the way. Also, he’s suspecting his own team has gone dark and off the grid. So the usual sources for information have dried up. Regardless, this man is determined to do his job, whatever it takes. Will Dwight be able to keep her safe, despite the looming threat that will inevitably show up at his front door?
The author keeps the suspense red hot by alternating the story between the bad guys and good guys, so we know when the bad guys are closing in while the good guys remain oblivious. I actually quite enjoyed the unraveling of the Mafia kingpin. This is a stand-alone story from Ms. Grant, even though she does have a cowboy series as well as her paranormal romances.
Grade: B
