Sandy M’s review of Soul Keeper (Brotherhood of Shadows, Book 1) by Cathryn Marr
Paranormal Romance published by Brokenoggin Books 9 Jul 19

For some reason, I kept seeing this cover online more than times than I’ve lately see any other book. I liked the look of this one when I first saw it, and I’d been looking for a paranormal to read. So I decided to bite. But I’m the one who got bitten this time around when choosing a book by its cover.

This story actually starts out pretty good. Rory is a dancer and instructor of young ones to give them freedom through dance. She had no voice when she was younger, so she’s always wanted to give back. She’s also “different,” having abilities she knows hardly anything about and has people watching over her because of all the badness in their world.

Then Luc shows up in her life, sent to keep her safe from those who want to drain her of her energy. He’s a fallen angel, vampire of the good kind, so to speak. Yes, there’s the bad kind too. And then there’s I don’t know how many characters introduced within a short period of time, it’s quite difficult to keep track, especially when you know you’ll be interacting with each of them – and maybe more still to come – over and over again through the book. On top of that, the story details get more and more complicated. Now, I’m a fairly intelligent person, but keeping up with all of this was just too much, mostly because it’s romance and I want to enjoy everything included in the story.

Amid all of this is the sex. I love good sex scenes as much as the next romance reader, but here it starts out in that otherworldly way that just seems silly to me. Rory even gets embarrassed about it all and she’s the one who instigated it. I don’t care for characters to have it both ways on any topic, but most especially sex. Seems phony in the long run.

So despite the fact this one started out on a good note, those notes became much too sour for me. It was the father/son hatred that did it all in for me, and I didn’t get much further after that particular chapter. Unfortunate, because I’d like to find a good paranormal series to start, but it is what it is.

Grade: DNF
