Tessa and David met at the bar at Top, one of Dallas’ premier restaurants. They hit it off, but Tessa got cold feet when she found out that David’s the stepson of the owner, her boss’s nephew by marriage. So she ghosted him. Definitely not a great recipe for romance, especially when he next hears her loudly and vociferously refusing an assignment to be his bodyguard. Not that it helps her, because now his uncle, Ian Taggart, is involved and protest is futile. Can she do her job and resist this guy she wants to drop her panties for?David has a lot to be excited about. He’s finally getting first-hand access to notes and diaries of the subject of his next book, a guy he’s long admired. There’s a possibility of a treasure hunt and the woman he’s been lusting about is accompanying him, even if she is his bodyguard.
When they arrive at the island, Tessa senses dangerous undercurrents that make red flags go up. She quickly transforms herself into David’s girlfriend to disarm the bad guys. Now they’re sharing a room and David is free to explore a D/s-type relationship with her to see if he can forge a strong connection that will last beyond this brief sojourn.
The story moves at a great pace, as readers explore the scenes between David and Tessa, while they try to solve the mystery of what’s really happening. I enjoyed David’s relationship growth as he finally comes to terms with the fact that Sean and Ian Taggart are family who appreciate him, even if he is different from the other swashbuckling military types in the family. Tessa also has a somewhat similar character growth as she commits to a relationship with David.
A great read and next chapter in this series.

All he needs to do is finish the book he’s working on and his tenure will be assured. When he gets invited to interview a reclusive expert, he knows he’s gotten lucky. But being the stepson of Sean Taggart comes with its drawbacks, including an overprotective mom who sends a security detail to keep him safe. He doesn’t need a bodyguard, but when Tessa Santiago shows up on his doorstep, the idea of her giving him close cover doesn’t seem so bad.
Tessa has always excelled at most anything she tried, except romance. The whole relationship thing just didn’t work out for her. She’s not looking for love, and she’s certainly not looking for it with an academic who happens to be connected to her boss’s family. The last thing she wants is to escort an overly pampered pretentious man-child around South America to ensure he doesn’t get into trouble. Still, there’s something about David that calls to her. In addition to watching his back, she will have to avoid falling into the trap of soulful eyes and a deep voice that gets her heart racing.
But when the seemingly simple mission turns into a treacherous race for a hidden artifact, David and Tess know this assignment could cost them far more than their jobs. If they can overcome the odds, the lost treasure might not be their most valuable reward.
