Veena’s review of The Blood King (Inferno Rising, Book 2) by Abigail Owen
Paranormal Romance published by Entangled Amara 25 Aug 20

“The one that marries the phoenix rules the dragons.” Except when a red dragon tries to use force.  Except not only does he kill the legitimate but ascends the throne anyway. He does maintain a constant search for the escaped phoenix mate who got away.  Nature finds a way to compensate when Serena gives birth to quadruplets, four possible phoenixes – an unheard of phenomena.

Upon their mother’s death, the four sisters have been hidden in different parts of the world to forestall a dragon finding them and mating with them. Kasia is the first to be found and mates Brand, helping him ascend as the Gold dragon king. Now Skylar is up and Ladon Orr, the Blue dragon king, who is her intended mate – something she’s not super happy about. Will Ladon survive this mating or burn to a crisp?

Skylar is a feisty character whose bark is definitely worse than her bite. She challenges Ladon like he’s never been challenged, plus she has no filters, fearlessly facing down his personal guard. Apparently, to their chagrin, she was able to sneak into their cave right under their noses and “air tight security.”  Ladon gets major points for treating her as an equal and having his sister as part of his personal security team, but, of course, the jury is out on how long Skylar will stay with Ladon.

Unlike Skylar, Ladon has been part of a happy family and seen his parent’s loving relationship firsthand. He brings a rare tenderness into their relationship, which is unexpected, given what we’ve seen of his character. It might even be said that he’s losing his edge, especially given his struggle between the competing needs of being a king, leading his dragons to victory, and keeping his mate safe.

There are some exciting moments when Skylar is captured and imprisoned in the Red king’s fortress in the mountain, her escape, and her skydiving exploits, all helping Ladon and his team fight the White dragons attacking them. The spine-chilling scene deep in the mountain with the revival of the dead witch, the blood sacrifice, and the adoption definitely set a stage for a future that I can’t wait to read.

Even though this book can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading these stories in order. This one ends on a cliffhanger with the next phoenix offering herself to be a potential mate – what’s with that, given that you know it’s the wrong ally, or is it?  I’m hooked and can’t wait to see what comes next.

Grade: B

Summary:

Ruthless dragon king Ladon Ormarr must keep his throne at all costs. And now, with war on the horizon, he’ll need a miracle. Luckily, the fates have dropped Skylar Amon right into his lap.

Except he may have met his match.

The feisty Amon sister has no fear—of him or any other dragon shifter—is brash, doesn’t stick to protocols, and regularly offends his warriors and advisers.

Skylar also has no intention of sticking around. She doesn’t believe in the whole destined mates thing and believes all dragon kings to be dangerous. But if it means taking out the High King who murdered her parents, she’ll put up with Ladon…temporarily.

But the fates have other plans. And when Skylar disappears in the middle of a battle, Ladon will burn down the world to find her.
