Veena’s review of Delta Force Defender (Alaska Force, Book 4) by Megan Crane
Romantic Suspense published by Berkley 07 Jul 20
The fire between Isaac Gentry and Carradine Scott has been smoldering throughout this series and readers have been waiting for the flames to take over. That it would take an incendiary device to burn down Carradine’s restaurant and bar is not the way I expected this story to go, but it definitely seems to do the trick. What an unexpected thrill ride this one turns out to be.
Carradine always knew the hammer would drop and now that it has, she puts her escape plan in action and takes off. She’s constantly looking behind her, but finally settles down that she’s not being followed – until Isaac shows up and rescues her from an impossible situation. Now we learn that Carradine, under a different name, was born into the MOB, but, thanks to a bomb, was able to escape her family. She’s been on the run since then, barely resting until she came to Alaska where she felt safe enough to put down temporary roots.
The prologue where we are introduced to the two sisters born into the Mafia, each radically different yet smothered under the weight of family expectations and find an unexpected escape when a bomb destroys their home and kills their family, is a wonderful touch. The bombing in Grizzly Harbor now sets off a new chapter in Carradine’s life, but she has Isaac now at her back with the resources of Alaska Force, so things will be different this time around. Right?
The story is fast paced and will leave you gasping as danger comes fast and furious and Isaac and Carradine twist and turn to stay safe, while making time to finally indulge in their insane chemistry. The final twist comes as Carradine’s past is finally put to bed, but now Isaac wakes up with a vengeance. Will they be able to work through all the roadblocks and finally find what they both need?
I absolutely love Ms. Crane’s exciting-with-the-right-amount-of-heat style and can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
Summary:
Dangerous secrets force Caradine Scott on the run from Grizzly Harbor—with Alaska Force leader Isaac Gentry in hot pursuit—in the irresistible new romantic suspense from USA Today bestselling author Megan Crane.
After an explosion that should have killed her, Caradine barely escaped her criminal family by leaving her old identity behind. These days she runs the Water’s Edge Cafe in a rugged little town on the edge of nowhere, vowing never to let anyone close to her again.
After his career in the military, Isaac is back home playing the part of an unassuming local in Grizzly Harbor, while also overseeing Alaska Force’s special ops work as the founder and commanding officer he once was in the Marines and beyond. He has better things to do than obsess over a woman who claims she hates him, but every glimpse he gets of the vulnerability beneath her prickly exterior is a distraction . . . and a challenge he can’t ignore.
When Caradine’s demons catch up with her, her cafe isn’t the only thing that blows up. Her past pushes them together, and closer to a future that’s been waiting for them all this time. They just have to survive long enough to enjoy it.
