Veena’s review of The Unbound Queen (Four Arts, Book 3) by M.J. Scott
Historical Fantasy published by Emscott Enterprises 28 Apr 20

Sophie has no desire to rule Anglion. She only wants a peaceful life with her husband and any children the Goddess might grace her with. Yet her power continues to grow in new and different ways, along with her fierceness and desire to do the right thing.  Now the Emperor of Illvya wants her to be his ally and the Queen of Anglion. From the beginning this trilogy has captured my imagination and the author continues throughout to delight and deliver.

There’s no help for Sophie and Cameron. They’re hunted in their own country, and if Sophie doesn’t fall in line with the emperor of Illva, there will be no sanctuary in the empire. If that isn’t enough for a witch to cope with, now Sophie is having visions of something very wrong with the Queen of Anglion.  Who can Sophie and Cameron trust to help them navigate through the undercurrents and political machinations that surround them?

Ms. Scott does a masterful job of blending in old-fashioned magic like familiars and scrying with modern-day marvels like steam carriages and flying ships. I love this genre, because the only limitation to fantasy is an author’s imagination. This book has been a long time coming, but it’s definitely worth the wait.

While it is not essential to go back and read the earlier books in the trilogy to enjoy this story, I didn’t!  But wished I had, so I actually went back and reread them.  I have definitely enjoyed my time in this world and hope the author has more stories to tell and will keep us updated on Sophie and Cameron’s doings.

Grade: A

Summary:

She’s been offered a crown but taking it could cost her everything…

Lady Sophie Mackenzie might be fifth in line to the Anglion throne but she never wanted to rule. But she’s bound to a demon, gifted with forbidden magic, and under threat from those who would use her unusual power for themselves. And now her hopes of finding peace in exile have been shattered by visions of a terrible darkness gnawing at the heart of her homeland.

Then the emperor of Illvya makes her an offer she can’t refuse—return home and overthrow the queen of Anglion, or lose everything she holds dear.
To face down the darkness and save her husband and everyone she loves, she may have to betray the country—and the queen—she once served and play the games of power she never wanted any part of.
But can she play them to win…
