Book CoverSandy M’s review of A Rogue Meets a Scandalous Lady (Mackenzies, Book 11) by [Author Name]
Historical Romance published by JA/GA Publishing 9 Jul 19

I’ve not read a lot of historical romance over the last couple of years – at least not nearly as much as I used to. Mostly it’s because the ones I have read just haven’t been up to par. But Jennifer Ashley never disappoints when it comes to historical romance. I’ve missed a few books in this series, but that didn’t dampen my enjoyment of this story one bit.

David Fleming is a man who lives on the edge. Taking care of anything and everything for Hart Mackenzie is only the beginning. We meet him here in the middle of a duel, where he ends up arrested, and only who he knows keeps him out of prison for the time being. So David takes his leave of London to visit an old friend, and there he finds the vicar’s niece also shunning society. He’s immensely taken with Sophie, and he’s surprised she wants anything to do with him after their initial meeting.

Sophie is the current gossip throughout the ton – her husband is divorcing her, accusing her of cheating, even going so far as to have friends lie for him to paint her as a wanton, all because he wants someone younger who can give him an heir – something Sophie has yet to do. So she’s waiting for news as she helps her uncle dig for a Roman villa that he’s sure is there in Shropshire. David gets it in his head he can help Sophie in her divorce – getting an annulment instead – because he knows just how to apply pressure to get things done. Sophie is worried his meddling will only make the situation worse.

In the meantime, Eleanor, Hart’s wife, has taken Sophie under her wing, mostly to make sure society keeps its teeth at bay so Sophie can still hold her head high. And they become good friends. I do enjoy the Mackenzie women, especially when they band together. Shenanigans are had all around so that both David and Sophie win the day to allow them to be together. I enjoyed the two of them very much with the snappy dialogue and rapport when together throughout the story. A nice addition to the series, of which I’m going to have to catch up with soon.

Grade: A

Summary:

David Fleming, Hart Mackenzie’s right-hand man, seeks refuge with his vicar friend in Shropshire, only to find that the vicar’s beautiful niece, Sophie, is seeking refuge as well. Tongues are wagging all over London about Sophie, and she finds that the only gentleman sympathetic to her plight is the reprobate David.

David and Sophie match wits as they help her uncle dig up the countryside searching for a villa from Roman Britain, and David decides to use his conniving ways to fix all Sophie’s problems.
