Sandy M’s review of Sweet Spot (Keyes Sisters, Book 2) by Susan Mallery
Contemporary Romance audiobook published by Harlequin Books 1 Aug 08
Though I began with the second book in this series, that makes no difference when it comes to the Keyes sisters. Each is delightful in their own right, and I enjoyed every minute of this audiobook about Nicole and Hawk.
I love the first meeting between Hawk and Nicole in her bakery. A student of Hawk’s is caught by Nicole stealing donuts and Hawk tries to talk her out of calling the police. Nicole is one not to take any guff, from the thief or his champion. At least at first. After remedying the situation, thus begins the fun of these two pretending to be lovers amid teenage chaos, an ex-husband who won’t give up, a younger sister who just needs a second chance, and pregnancy gone wild.
It’s during their fake relationship that things begin to change for both Nicole and Hawk, though at different stages and always in different circumstances. Hawk has also been married before and he’s been raising his daughter on his own – a daughter who is spoiled to the core, no thanks to her father who has filled her head with a fairy tale about love. Nicole has her own issues with youngest sister Jesse who jumps from guy to guy, including Nicole’s hubby, and things are, of course, cold and distant between the siblings. Then there’s the star quarterback of the local high school team whom Hawk coaches and who also dates the man’s daughter.
Because they are at different stages in their lives, things don’t always go smoothly. Most of that is on Hawk and his unconscious way of keeping his wife alive, which confuses Nicole the closer they get. Add in sudden changes in the teenagers’ circumstances, and things get more and more complicated, with Hawk becoming the dad his daughter deserves. He finally sees though the past to find happiness once again. Nicole is ready for forgiveness and needs to find Jesse to make their family whole again.
I enjoyed the narrator for this audiobook. She does a great job with voices, which is usually what turns me off on romance audio. I have since begun listening to Book 1 and it is enlightening on the early relationship of the sisters and how they’ve gotten to where they are now. I’m especially looking forward to Jesse’s story and her reunion with Nicole. A very nice series from Ms.Mallery.
Summary:
“Responsibility” should be Nicole Keyes’s middle name. After all, not many people would sacrifice their lives to run the family bakery and raise a younger sibling. But with Nicole’s twin sister now blissfully married and her younger sis turning out more femme fatale than girl-next-door, super reliable Nicole is getting sick of putting everyone else’s needs first! Enter Hawk. The deliciously sexy former NFL player offers Nicole a taste of the freedom she craves. Hawk may know the way, blindfolded, to her sweet spot, but Nicole’s not about to let him get close enough to break her heart. Of course, she might not have a choice in the matter if Hawk’s past keeps getting in the way of their present….
