Kristie J’s review of Beneath Your Beautiful (Beautiful Series, Book 1) by Emery Rose
Contemporary Romance published by Amazon Digital Services 17 May 18
Although this book has been out for a while, I just discovered it by new author Emery Rose, and I was so impressed I wanted to share the love.
Eden, our small-town heroine, is working on getting over a bad break up. Seems her fiancé is in love with a good friend of Eden’s and she catches them ‘together.’ And if that’s not painful enough, seems the bitch is pregnant. Eden decides to leave their small town altogether and head to New York. She’s having a wee bit of trouble finding a job, until someone gives her a tip that a bartender was just fired by a local bar owner and chances are good she might get hired. She heads over and after a bit of a struggle gets hired.
The bar owner, of course, is our hero. Killian has also been through a really hard time. Once a famous and well-known MMA fighter, he gave it up when he fought one of his good friends and his friend died as a result. Although he loved sport, the guilt was overwhelming to him. He has a physically abusive father who still tries to meddle in his life and never thinks Killian is good enough. Killian has a young brother whom he feels responsible for. His brother is a drug addict and is currently missing, so Killian has a lot he’s dealing with. The last thing he wants is these feelings that are starting to develop for Eden, his newest hire.
But despite his rough exterior, inside Killian is a very good and decent guy with a strong protective streak. Add to it incredibly good looks and Eden, who also doesn’t want to get involved in a relationship at this point, is drawn more and more to Killian. And with Killian, well, the heart wants what the heart wants and his heart wants Eden.
This is a real hidden gem of a book and I really hope it becomes less and less hidden. Killian makes for a wonderful hero. As I said, he’s caring and he’s thoughtful and he does take wonderful care of Eden, yet at the same time he’s giving her the freedom she needs. And unlike Killian, Eden comes from a loving home. Her mother died much too young, but she is close to her father and her two older brothers.
The secondary characters are also well done, from the interesting staff at Killian’s bar to Eden’s overprotective family. There is a second book out (already bought and paid for by me) which focuses on Connor, Killian’s younger and very troubled brother. He makes an appearance late in the book and I’m looking forward to his story.
The story is told so well and the characters so well done, it really is hard to believe this is Ms. Rose’s first book. I had to double check to make sure. The only down side is she doesn’t have a back list I can catch up on.
