Veena’s review of The Conspiracy (Maximum Security, Book 1) by Kat Martin
Romantic Suspense published by HQN Books 22 Jan 19
Chase Garret had once been friends with Michael Winston, but, given Michael’s father’s reputation as a crime lord and Michael’s drug addiction, that friendship petered out long ago. Harper Winston knows the only person who can help her find her brother and bring him safely home is Michael’s one-time friend, owner of Maximum Security. Get ready for another dose of Ms. Martin’s spine-tingling romance with a hefty dose of action and adventure and a whole new slew of characters to get to know.
What I really enjoy in many of Ms. Martin’s books is the heroines who can kick ass and take names, but Harper is in a class of her own. At every turn Chase underestimates her, but when she’s ready for her trip into the Colombian jungle, fluent in Spanish and ready to shoot her way out is a great scene. Yes, he does have to come to her rescue when she tangles with a snake, but then snakes – eeeeeeeek!
Ms. Martin weaves a nice believable story in how Michael is kidnapped and goes missing, along with a girl he met on vacation. She twines Michael’s love story right into this story, giving readers a nice two-fer. Clearly their trip into the Colombian jungle has stirred a hornets’ nest with trouble following them back to Texas. Chase and Harper also have developed feelings, along with sexual heat, but then her father is in the cross-hairs of the DEA. Chase is not going to end up popular when Harper finds out that Chase has been serving the DEA’s agenda while pursuing her.
Of course, Maximum Security has a host of new characters whose stories are just waiting to be told, including Chase’s two brothers.
Summary:
Harper Winston’s brother has disappeared. Pursuing his dream of sailing the Caribbean, Michael hasn’t responded to texts or emails in days. When even the Coast Guard can’t find him, Harper is forced to take desperate measures. Which means going to Chase Garrett, once her brother’s best friend, now the only man she can trust…or so she hopes.
As the successful owner of Maximum Security, Chase has learned to trust his gut. He knows Harper’s father is mixed up in a deadly business, and suspects there’s more to Michael’s disappearance than meets the eye. Getting involved again with the Winstons goes against everything he stands for, yet old loyalties die hard. As the case draws him closer to Harper and deeper into the Winstons’ snarled crime family, he is forced to put everything on the line to keep Harper safe…and both of them alive.
