Book CoverVeena’s review of Unspeakable (Deadly Secrets, Book 4) by Elisabeth Naughton
Romantic Thriller published by Montlake Romance 20 Nov 18

I always enjoy Ms. Naughton’s books and I’m always surprised to find that I’ve missed a whole series between one book and the next.  For instance, I picked this one up, only to find that there are three I missed before this book. Of course, while I enjoyed this story, there are a few times when I wished I had read the earlier installments.
Rusty McLane is unable to leave his past or his guilt for not being there for his step-sister behind. Every night he goes out and trolls clubs, looking to rescue young girls who are being exploited. It is inevitable that he becomes a murder suspect when one of the young ladies disappears and he’s the last one seen with her, plus he has bruises from fighting.  Thanks to his influential parents, no charges are levied against him, but his lawyer assigns investigator Harper Blake to look deeper at Rusty.

Harper has her own axe to grind. She’s an ex-cop, who was forced out of the force due to politics. She wants to leverage this opportunity with Rusty to get herself reinstated, particularly when she smells mob involvement. The story, of course, plays out with enough twists and turns to satisfy an adrenaline junkie as Rusty and Harper are soon buried knee deep into sex traffickers and nasty people shooting at them.

As the story progresses, both Harper and Rusty find their past catching up with them, even as they work on forging a new future together.  All in all, this story is a great ride that I’m glad I caught, and I’ll have to go back and read the three books that came before.

Grade: B

Summary:

All his siblings have moved on from their troubling pasts, but Rusty McClane can’t leave his behind. Not even when his freedom is in jeopardy.
Legal investigator Harper Blake can sense a bad boy. She’s drawn to them—like she is to her mysterious and brooding new client. The police believe that Rusty is involved with the case of a missing underage girl. Harper’s job is to find evidence to defend him. But is her sexy suspect a predator…or something else?
If Rusty is guilty of anything, it’s of stirring something primitive in Harper. The closer they get, the harder it is to believe the worst of him.
But in an underworld filled with sex trafficking, kidnapping, and murder, Harper will need to be cautious about whom she trusts. Because Rusty isn’t the only one with secrets.
