Book CoverVeena’s review of Dragonfire (Dragon Kings, Book 14) by Donna Grant
Romantic Fantasy published by St. Martin Paperbacks 30 Oct 18

In Ms. Grant’s version the Romany gypsies became wanderers to escape the justice of the dragon kings, or at least that’s the tale that Sabina had from her grandmother. In this exciting chapter in dragon king history, Sabina gets to go to the land of fire and ice and fulfill the prophecy that her Romany grandmother had once shared with her.
Sabina and her brother live a fairly isolated life in the Carpathian mountains. She’s a jewelry designer leveraging the internet to create a client base for her customized offerings. Her brother is simply devoted to the animals he rescues. Sabina has no time for magic and the tales that her grandmother once told her, until two dragons fly over her property and show up as humans at her door.

Suddenly her quiet brother is full of information and chooses to accompany the two men to fulfill the quest for the sword. It will take Val, Roman, Serena, her brother, and a couple of other dragon kings, along with their allies, to find and retrieve the sword. As the group journeys to where it began, Val’s homeland, the land of fire and ice, we get to experience what happened that fateful night when the sword disappeared. Despite the multiple times over the centuries Val has searched for it, he’s been unable to find it.

Once again, a dragon king calls his magic and fails. What is stronger than a dragon’s magic? We learn more about a sinister plot that was hatched centuries ago with druids, fae, and humans wielding an unholy magic that seems to be emerging in the form of the wooden dragon and other artifacts designed to sow destruction and bring down the human/dragon alliance.

For a while I felt that this series was a bit flat, but excitement seems to be building up again.

Summary:

It was a soul-deep longing, one that got into his bones and settled there, sending whispers of desire through him. The need, the hunger, grew tenfold with every breath. . . .
As a Dragon King, Roman is sworn to protect all mortals—even though they no longer believe in dragons. But deep in the Carpathian Mountains, he discovers a beautiful and mysterious gypsy who possesses the power to see into his very soul. To reignite the fire in his heart. And to help him find the long-lost sword that could save the dragons forever…
Sabina remembers the stories her grandmother told her. Legends of dragons and kings, fire and ice. And she’s never forgotten the dark prophecy that filled her ancestors with fear—a fate they tried to prevent by stealing a Dragon King’s sword. Sabina knows that helping Roman is dangerous. He is a dragon betrayed, and more powerful than any man. He could destroy her in a single fiery embrace. But how can she resist the longing in his eyes—or the feelings in her heart—when their destinies are bound by desire?
