Kristie J’s review of Disgrace by Brittainy Cherry
Contemporary Romance published by Amazon Digital Services 18 Jun 18
I got this book free through Kindle Unlimited. When I had to give a book back to get a new one, I purchased this one so I could return it. I enjoyed it so much I thought chances are good I will read it again. I’ve read a few Brittainy Cherry books and they are very angsty and emotional and in the right mood I love that kind of book. I was obviously in the right frame of mind because I loved this one.
Grace and her husband were childhood sweethearts and she thought they would be married forever. But her inability to conceive did a real number on their marriage, and at the beginning of the book they have split up. Both are headed to the small town they grew up in, but they don’t want anyone to know what’s going on. She is devastated because she thought they would be forever and she is still hoping they will get back together, once her husband has time to see what he’s been missing. But this isn’t to be when she hears and sees devastating proof that he will never be coming back.
Then she meets Jackson, and, after an unintentional funny interaction, Jackson, the local auto mechanic, says he will try to fix her car. The sparks fly between them and they give into them, but neither intends it to be anything more than physical. But as they get to know each other more and more, their original plans change.
I love this book. As I write the review, more and more of it is coming back. The story opens on a very sad and emotional moment, when Jackson was a little boy and his mother was leaving him. His whole story is heartbreaking. His father fell apart when his mother left and became a mean, violent drunk. It’s a small town, and, as a result, Jackson has been tarred with the same disgust as his father, even though he’s never deserved it and suffers the scorn of the town.
Grace has an unhealthy relationship with a parent too, only with her it’s her mother. She has always been super critical of Grace and never supported her. Even with her husband, he mother takes his side, despite the fact he betrayed Grace. Her mother’s constant refrain is “well, if you did this” and Grace has never felt love from her mother. So these two hurting people find each other and, oh my, it’s a wonderful story of finding “The One.”
Now I’m glad I did buy the book when I returned it to Kindle Unlimited, because just doing this review has me wanting to read it again.
Summary:
Each day I prayed for my husband to love me again.
After fifteen years together, he walked away from me, and into the arms of another.
I didn’t know how to cope. I didn’t know my worth. I didn’t know how to exist without him by my side.
All I wanted was for him to come back to me.
Then, Jackson Emery appeared.
He was supposed to be a distraction for my mind. A summer fling. A confidence boost to my bruised heart.
We were perfect for one another, because we both knew we wouldn’t last. Jackson didn’t believe in commitment, and I no longer believed in love. He was too closed-off for me, and I was too damaged for him.
Everything was fine, until one night my heart skipped a beat.
I didn’t expect him to make me laugh. To make me think. To make my sadness somewhat disappear.
When our time was up, my heart didn’t know how to walk away.
Each day I prayed for my husband to love me again, yet slowly my prayers began to shift toward the man who wasn’t right for me.
I prayed for one more smile, one more kiss, one more laugh, one more touch…
I prayed for him to be mine.
Even though I knew his heart wasn’t destined to love.
