Sandy M’s review of Tailspin by Sandra Brown
Romantic Suspense published by Grand Central Publishing 7 Aug 18
Great characters and awesome story lines aside, what keeps me reading every Sandra Brown book is the twists and turns that happen throughout. This latest book is no exception, and, as I say in every review I write for her, it’s my favorite so far.
I also like the way Ms. Brown gives her characters a near impossible way to a happily ever after – either something in their lives prevent that or, as with Rye and Brynn, a mistrust between them that will be difficult to overcome. Rye has his issues in life, so he avoids them by taking to the skies. He’s a damned good pilot and he knows it, so it doesn’t matter where, for whom, weather, whatever – if it keeps him occupied in a place he loves to be, he goes for it. Thus begins the most turbulent forty-eight hours of his life when he delivers a secret-laden black box through heavy fog and ends up crashing his plane when sabotaged during landing. First twist.
The first turn comes when he flattens the person who sneaks out of the woods to check out his damaged plane and who then hightails it out of there when they find the cockpit empty. Brynn is an M.D. with a heart – especially compared to her “partner” – which she’s ready to jeopardize for what’s in that black box. But even though these two start out with suspicions and mistrust about the other, they soon learn there’s deeper forces working against them, including local Georgia law enforcement as the surprises keep coming.
As Rye and Brynn race against the clock, their shared situation hastens their unexpected attraction to one another, and I absolutely love these two together, whether it’s snapping repartee or sizzling love making. Their trust is slow in coming, but the more they get to know each other and the more they get to know their enemies, they begin to build an exciting foundation that should make life after the conclusion of this book one heck of a great time for them.
The villains of the story are greedy and ruthless, lacking in anything humane, and just plain evil. Since there’s more than one, all those descriptors won’t surprise any reader. They even get their fair share of the aforementioned twists and turns.
Another winner from Sandra Brown. And another year or more of anxiously waiting for this reviewer for the next book.
Summary:
Rye Mallett, a fearless “freight dog” pilot charged with flying cargo to far-flung locations, is often rough-spoken and all business, but soft on regulations when they get in the way of meeting a deadline. But he does have a rock-solid reputation: he will fly in the foulest weather, day or night, and deliver the goods safely to their destination. So when Rye is asked to fly into a completely fogbound northern Georgia town and deliver a mysterious black box to a Dr. Lambert, he doesn’t ask questions. As Rye’s plane nears the isolated landing strip, more trouble than inclement weather awaits him. He is greeted first by a sabotage attempt on his plane that causes him to crash land, and then by Dr. Brynn O’Neal, who claims she was sent for the box in Dr. Lambert’s stead. Despite Rye’s “no-involvement” policy when it comes to other people’s problems, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to the intrigue surrounding his cargo . . . and to the mysterious and alluring Brynn.Soon Rye and Brynn are in a treacherous forty-eight-hour race to deliver the box before time runs out. With everyone from law enforcement officials to hired thugs hot on their heels, they must learn to trust each other so they can protect their valuable cargo from those who would kill for it.
