Veena’s review of Darkest Night (Wired and Dangerous, Book 2) by Megan Erickson
Romantic Suspense published by Forever 31 Jul 18
A college student is kidnapped from campus and made a sex slave. It’s not totally clear to me how she escaped and why she’s on the run, but she’s clearly being hunted and can barely stay a step ahead of her hunters. Jock Bosh is he hunter or savior? An interesting if convoluted tale of a group of vigilantes who have their own baggage but have formed a bond of sorts to help each other out.
Fiona is whisked from her apartment in New York to meet with her friend whom she saved at the price of her own freedom and who has now dispatched Josh to watch over Fiona and keep her safe. As the relationship between Josh and Fiona develops, the intensity of the men hunting Fiona seems to intensify. It turns out that the sex traffickers are trying to reassemble a cast of characters that got away mixed in with new beauties. Thanks to Josh’s patience, Fiona is finally able to handle and move past the psychological damage that has prevented her from leading a full life. Does she have the courage to go back undercover and help capture the men responsible and put this evil to bed once and for all?
Fiona is a character that I got emotionally invested in, especially when, with a desperate courage, she gives the tracker who would bring help to her to the girls she feels need assistance more desperately than she does. Will Josh and her friends who have promised to keep her safe find her in time? I enjoy a nice thrill ride with twists and turns. While this story certainly has many elements of suspense and surprise, it is not an adrenaline-fueled, hair-rising ride. It does have a wonderful cast of very colorful characters that I expect to see more of as the story line develops and the series progresses.
