Sammy’s review of Midnight Unbound (Midnight Breed, Book 14.6) by Lara Adrian
Paranormal Romance published by Lara Adrian, LLC 11 Mar 17
After reading The Chosen by J.R. Ward, I was kind of on a vampire kick. It’s been a while since I read The Midnight Breed Series. After the Vampires came out of the closet and saved the world, I tried reading the spin-off books, but they read a little too young and angsty for my liking. Lucky for me, I was on Facebook and I noticed Ms. Adrian’s post about this novella. After I read the blurb, I was all in. I was always intrigued by the Hunters and was curious about what happened to them after the Order set them free from the big bad Drago. I was not disappointed, and over the moon the new story arc is all about the Hunters coming winter 2017. I’ll have my 1-Click finger all ready for release day.
Scythe is a not only a Breed, but he was bred to be a stone cold killer. He was born in Drago’s lair and the horrors these Breeds and Breedmates had to endure is crushing. After being freed from his kill collar, he came across a young woman and child that were in dire need. She had a drug problem and she continued to make bad decisions due to her addictions. She and her son were taken to a killing club and Scythe tracked them down. When he found them he tried to save everyone else. He made Mayrene and Jacob leave the way he came in, while he was trying to release the other victims. He was holding the fan blade so that they could make their way through, when he lost his focus and thus he lost his hand. Don’t be fooled by his loss of a hand, because he’s very much a dangerous opponent. Unfortunately, while Mayrene and Jacob make it out of the building, the bad guys kill them. Scythe lost a little more of his soul. Thanks to a former Hunter named Asher, he saved his life and kicked his ass to keep him alive.
Chiara Genova is trying to keep her and her son alive after her mate is killed. She’s being stalked and the Order asks Scythe to come and keep her alive. They decide to split up mother and son so they are not easy targets. Scythe is attracted to her and Chiara finds him fascinating. They head back to her villa in Italy and wait for the stalker to make his move. Scythe is having a hard time keeping his lust at bay, so he’s grumpy and unfriendly. But Chiara is no wilting flower and pushes his limits. The bad guy shows up and the bullets fly. Scythe is hurt and he needs her blood to heal because he knows this Breed will be back with some help. From that moment on, it’s a fast ride. The chemistry between Scythe and Chiara is off the charts. Their moment when they bond is beautiful and sexy. When the shit hits the fan, Chiara has a pretty special power that saves the night.
This was a quick read, but it was chock full of everything I loved about the Breed books. My only complaint was that it was too short. I wanted 200 more pages. I loved these two as a couple and I can’t wait for the full-length novel coming out later this year.
Summary:
A lethal Breed warrior is called upon by his brethren in the Order to bodyguard a beautiful young widow he’s craved from afar in this new novella in the “steamy and intense” (Publishers Weekly) Midnight Breed vampire romance series from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian.
As a former Hunter bred to be a killing machine in the hell of Dragos’s lab, Scythe is a dangerous loner whose heart has been steeled by decades of torment and violence. He has no room in his world for love or desire–especially when it comes in the form of a vulnerable, yet courageous, Breedmate in need of protection. Scythe has loved–and lost–once before, and paid a hefty price for the weakness of his emotions. He’s not about to put himself in those chains again, no matter how deeply he hungers for lovely Chiara.
For Chiara Genova, a widow and mother with a young Breed son, the last thing she needs is to put her fate and that of her child in the hands of a lethal male like Scythe. But when she’s targeted by a hidden enemy, the obsidian-eyed assassin is her best hope for survival . . . even at the risk of her heart.
