Book CoverKristie J’s review of Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon
SciFi Romance published by Ruby Dixon 3 Apr 15

I love SciFi romance, and this book was a freebie at Amazon, so I thought I’d give it a read.  It’s a short story, at only 181 pages and it’s odd and quirky, and a little bit silly, but I’m going to recommend it nonetheless.

Our heroine, Georgie, wakes up and is totally confused as to where she is.  It takes her a while to figure out, since she’s also suffering from a nasty headache.  It turns out she, along with a number of other women, have been kidnapped by aliens and are on board a space ship.  They are a real nasty group that is holding the women, especially the “care” takers.  They do some real nasty things to the women when the women disobey in any way, and this is a difficult to read, but I kept going, no problem.  I just wanted to give a quick heads-up.

The spaceship runs into trouble, and they jettison the shuttle that the women are being held in and it lands on an ice planet . The women have no supplies to speak of and nothing to keep them warm.  Georgie somehow is made the leader and, as such, she leaves looking for someone who can help them.  She runs across one of the inhabitants.  He’s big and blue and has horns and a tail.  They can’t communicate with each other, but since this book jumps between the two POVs, we get to know what he’s thinking too.  Vektal, our hero, is ecstatic when he comes across Georgie.  Although she looks totally different, he just knows she’s destined to be his mate.  As the ‘men’ of this race outnumber the women by a considerable number, he’s happy, happy, happy that he’s found ‘his’ woman.

But because they can’t communicate, she can’t tell him there are a bunch more women that need help and he is bound and determined to see her safe and sound back at his lodgings.

Vektal is such a cutie patootie hero.  He really cares about Georgie and is very careful with her.  In some ways the book reminded me a tiny bit of Transcendence by Shay Savage, and if anyone has followed me at all, they will know how obsessed I am about that book.  Vektal is the same kind of hero as Edh.  Once he meets his love, his prime focus is protecting her.

I really like Georgie too.  Despite the desperate circumstances, she never gave up.  She took the leadership role, though that was the last thing she wanted to do.  Pretty wary of Vektal at first, she soon comes to care about him and then her feelings grow deeper.

There are a number of books in this series and I’m gonna get me some.  They aren’t deep or angsty, but since I really like deep and angsty, this is an excellent book to ‘decompress’ with, and as a freebie, I say get it and see what you think.

Summary:

You’d think being abducted by aliens would be the worst thing that could happen to me. And you’d be wrong. Because now, the aliens are having ship trouble, and they’ve left their cargo of human women – including me – on an ice planet.

And the only native inhabitant I’ve met? He’s big, horned, blue, and really, really has a thing for me…
