Kristie J’s review of The Player and the Pixie (Rugby, Book 2) by Penny Reid & L.H. Cosway
Contemporary Romance published by Amazon Digital Services 12 Apr 16
I can’t get enough of L.H. Cosway. I discovered her just a few months ago and it’s like I’m addicted to her. And now this is the second book she’s written in collaboration with Penny Reid, and this one, as well as the first book, The Hooker and the Hermit, are just as wickedly wonderful as the books she’s written on her own
The heroine in this book is the sister of Ronan Fitzpatrick of the first book and the hero of this one is Sean Cassidy, a secondary character in the first book. In that one he was a real jerk, so this is a redemption story. Can he be turned around to someone you care about? Short answer – yes. Read on if you want more detail.
Sean is on the same professional rugby team that Ronan plays for. He’s very talented, but overall he’s a jerk to people and few can stand him, Ronan in particular since Sean boffed Ronan’s girlfriend at the time. There is a great deal of enmity between the two of them now.
I loved Lucy in the first book. She’s a free spirit who loves her brother deeply. So when circumstances bring her into orbit with Sean, she wants nothing to do with him,\ – whoever is Ronan’s enemy is her enemy. But when he catches her in the midst of shoplifting something, she has this little issue as a way to alleviate a very unhealthy relationship with her mother, and when Sean doesn’t turn her in, and even ‘gets’ it since he has also has his own peculiar version of kleptomania – he steals beauty products he likes from one night stands –she begins to see there just may be something beneath his asshole front.
And, of course, there is. He comes from a very wealthy family, but his mother just gave him away when he was young and he was raised by his cold, cold aunt. He’s lived his life without experiencing love, except for his younger cousin, and he tends to push people away before they can hurt him.
Sean and Lily draw closer and closer and when they finally ‘do the deed,’ much to Lucy’s amazement, Sean is terrible in the sack, and, what’s even cuter, he knows it and is not sure how to get better. So because Lucy is a free spirit and very attracted to him, she agrees to teach him how to please a woman.
Of course, they get closer and as she gets to see the little boy behind the jerk, the little boy no one else sees, her feelings get deeper and deeper. On Sean’s side, he does NOT want to let her go. But there is the matter of the ongoing hostility between Sean and Ronan and Lucy’s growing confliction. At one point she asks Sean to please say something nice about Ronan to his face, and his ‘compliment’ really struck my funny bone.
This redemption story works wonderfully well. It’s funny, it’s quirky and I love everything about it. I love Lucy and her multi-coloured hair and Mss. Reid and Conway manage to completely turn Sean around until he becomes a character I adore.
I enjoyed the first book immensely and this one even more. I surely hope there are more coming up in this series. I can picture who might be next.
Summary:
How can someone so smokin’ hot be so bad in bed? I mean, Sean Cassidy is absolute rubbish. RUBBISH. He is the epitome of walking, talking false advertising and I want a refund! Plus he’s an arsehole. So… what is wrong with me that I can’t stop thinking about him?
THE PIXIE
Lucy Fitzpatrick doesn’t like rugby.
As the little sister of Ireland’s most infamous rugby player, Lucy can’t seem to escape the championship-sized shadow cast by her big brother, or her mother’s frequent attempts to micromanage her future. Her rainbow hair is as free-spirited as her quest for inner peace, yet overbearing expectations keep bringing her down. And when she’s down, her compulsive little problem lands her in seriously big trouble.THE PLAYER
Sean Cassidy is a cold-hearted brute… or so he’s been told. Frequently. By everyone.
His blonde locks, baby blues, and rock hard bod make ladies the world over drool with desire. As the rugby world’s second most infamous player, he should be basking in his success. But Sean has never been content settling for second place, and his frequent confrontations with Lucy’s big brother leave him cold. And when he’s cold, his compulsive little problem lands him in the lap of Lucy Fitzpatrick.THE PLAN
Sean has a problem only Lucy can solve. Lucy has a problem only Sean can fix. The solution seems obvious: you scratch my back, and I’ll bail you out of jail. But when their business arrangement unexpectedly leaves Sean scorching hot and Lucy on the precipice of inner peace, can they convince the world—and Lucy’s big brother in particular—that this is the real deal?Either way, both the Player and the Pixie are about to teach each other some pretty monumental lessons about family, life, but most importantly, love.
