Book CoverVeena’s review of Fire Bound (Sisters Of The Heart, Book 5) by Christine Feehan
Contemporary Romance published by Jove 26 Apr 2016

As each of the sisters bonds with a Prakenskii who comes calling, the stories were becoming a bit too predictable and I hesitated over picking this one up to read. Lisa, one of the two single sisters, definitely wants to keep any remaining Prakenskii far from her and is determined to travel away from the farm and remove herself to Europe. Unfortunately for Lisa, her fate has already been foretold by an author who plotted and created a Prakenskii specifically meant for her. Fortunately for the reader, the story is a nice departure from the others in this series and has enough twists and turns to keep you engaged through the telling.

As Lisa gets ready to leave the farm for her trip to Europe, the brothers enlist one of their remaining siblings as a bodyguard.  It turns out that both Lisa and Casmir, besides wielding the fire element, are also assassins and expert at wearing many disguises.  Lisa, it turns out, has been systematically avenging herself on the members of the crime family responsible for assassinating her parents on her trips to Europe. On this trip she plans to also take out the Russian Oligarchs who are targeting the Prakenskiis and by extension her sisters.

As it turns out, thanks to Casmir Lisa finds out that she’s been used as a tool by her uncle. She’s left reeling as one by one everything she’s ever believed in and worked toward is torn apart. Fortunately, Casmir is there for her, even if they did have a rough start to their relationship.  They make an excellent team both on and off the job, and while Casmir wants to protect and wrap her up in cotton wool, he bites the bullet and partners with her in achieving their objectives.   I feel really sorry for Lisa as one by one people she once trusted and befriended turn on her. The last betrayal is so horrific that it caught me by surprise, even though by now I knew that Lisa’s whole life had been built on lies and betrayal.

We do get to meet the last brother whom no one has seen for a long time, because he’s so deep under cover that he can’t risk exposing himself.  From Lisa’s reaction and from what I recall, there are definitely going to be fireworks when he shows up at the farm to claim his other half. With that kind a lead-in it’s a foregone conclusion that this last story is a must read, if we want to see the eldest Prakenskii get his comeuppance.

I enjoyed this story. It’s well paced and a little different, having plots within plots, some of which are known to the reader and some of which come as a surprise.

Grade: B

Summary:

Flame-haired Lissa Piner is a skilled glass blower whose delicate gift conceals a burning inner strength that can destroy as exquisitely as it can create. Commissioned to design chandeliers for a string of luxury hotels, her remarkable skills have taken her to Italy. But Lissa’s real mission there is a secret. For her entire life has been a lie, leading to a chance to avenge a terrible wrong.

Enlisted as her bodyguard is Casmir Prakenskii, a trained assassin living off the grid. In Lissa, he sees a kindred spirit—something unexpected and wicked, mysterious and sensual. But more than desire is about to bring them together: because both of their pasts cry out for revenge. And for two people with this many secrets, this much passion, and this many enemies, someone is bound to get burned.
