Sandy M’s review of Dead by Midnight (I-Team, Book 7.5) by Pamela Clare
Romantic Suspense novella published by Amazon Digital Services 15 Nov 15
Holy shit! Romantic suspense at its very best in the hands of Pamela Clare. This page turner keeps you on the edge of your seat, keeps you guessing at what’s coming next, and keeps you praying all the I-Team characters you’ve come to love will make it out alive during a festive Christmas party turned harrowing nightmare. An added plus is this novella is much longer than the norm, so be prepared to miss dinner, not sleep, be late for work or whatever other activity you need to get to. Chances are very good you won’t make it.
All of the I-Team characters are here in full force. It’s Christmastime and several members are in attendance at a Denver hotel for a bit of celebration. Amid the partying we begin to get caught up with what’s been happening in these characters’ lives since their featured books. And that’s when the terror begins. Terrorists lock down the hotel and have enough hostages to keep them in business for quite some time. The only team member who luckily misses being taken is Marc Hunter, though his wife Sophie is sequestered with all of his friends. Marc is now on a one-man mission to gather as much intel as possible and put down as many terrorists as possible before perhaps being caught himself.
On the outside are Julian, Zach, and Nick, along with other family members who can only sit back and wait for news. These three, however, aren’t about to sit out too long when they can be using that intel from Marc to gain the upper hand, all despite other agencies that want to do things by the book or their way. Not gonna wash with the I-Team! Each team member does his or own thing, as we’ve seen in previous books, and it’s so great to see them in action again. I love Gabe’s way of getting back into the building after being released. And the emotion never lets up whether it’s husband and wife or friend to friend who comes so very close to losing their loved one. They all know their better half will be taken care of if anything happens to any one of them.
The action is non-stop. Ms. Clare doesn’t pull punches when it comes to maybe sacrificing a character for the sake of the story, and I found myself holding my breath a few times, wondering how some scenes were going to end. There are plenty of close calls as those on the outside looking in make their way through danger to help and those on the inside keep trying at every turn to even the odds and hope they all make it out in one piece. This is exactly how romantic suspense should be written. I can count on one hand those who are go-to authors for me when I need some action, and Pamela Clare is one of them. She delivers every damned time.
