Sandy M’s review of The Gingerbird House by Rula Sinara
Contemporary Romance published by Indiewrites, Inc. 5 Nov 15
This book starts out really well – a father and son, obviously on the run from something, and he’s trying to find a safe place for them, which is his grandparents’ cabin that is supposedly in disrepair and unoccupied. I really like Quinn Weston and his son Jax, but then…
Things move too fast to make this a cohesive story. I wanted to see more of the trials this pair went through. They’d been moving for six months after Quinn lost his job. They find the cabin, but it isn’t the rundown place Quinn was led to believe. That’s where Lia comes in. She’s bitten off a big chunk in opening up her animal shelter. Everything she has and wants is riding on its success. She offers Quinn some work around the place to help them both out. And with just a little conflict, they fall for each other.
I realize this is supposed to one of those sweet stories. I don’t need steam and sizzle in every story I read. That’s fine. But then I need something else to take its place, like the aforementioned trials. This was originally part of an anthology, so it’s a bit short and hurries the story along too quickly. There’s not a smooth transition throughout to get to that HEA. The usual happens – Quinn’s ex is an obstacle, Lia goes behind his back to help out, along with other tidbits we’ve read before.
What I do really like is the relationship between father and son. No doubt that man loves his boy. And no doubt Quinn and Lia fall in love. It’s just the road to get there is much too straight, no curves, twists or turns to really give the book the oomph it needs.
Summary:
Draining her account and moving to the run-down cabin on her family’s farm is the only way Lia Logan can save her animal shelter…and failure isn’t an option. But the last thing she expects is to find a homeless carpenter and his son hiding out at the cabin. And when it comes to Quinn Weston…it may be her heart that needs saving.
