Veena’s review of Dark Alpha’s Embrace (Reapers, Book 2) by Donna Grant
Paranormal Romance published by Swerve 16 Feb 16
I like this new series from Donna Grant. Using some of the characters we’ve met previously in her other series, she introduces a new cast of characters with a completely different but overlapping charter, which brings a new edge to the world of dragons, warriors, and fae. The Reapers are an elite band of assassins under the leadership of death, who police the world of the fae who are currently situated in the human realm working to keep humanity safe from the increased attacks by the dark fae. They are also under attack themselves by rogue reapers who’ve escaped imprisonment and are out to revenge themselves. In the midst of this turmoil, a young librarian, who has the rare power to read ancient texts, comes under the scrutiny of the rogues as well as the reapers. As the story plays out it blends action, adventure, and romance to give us another winner from Ms. Grant.
River is a strong, compelling character and she more than holds her own against all the heavy weights who suddenly come into her life. It’s interesting how her past and Kyran’s past intersects and clearly he’s the guy who’s going to keep her safe, even as his attraction to her puts her in a unique kind of danger.
The Dark Kings series started out by painting all dark fae as evil, but gradually we came across a few that had redeeming factors. It’s interesting that the Reapers consist of both dark and light, proving the old adage that it takes both nature and nuture to determine good versus evil. This story gathers momentum as sides are chosen and lines are drawn. Death, for all River’s power, might not be totally immune to evil or love, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how her story eventually plays out.
Kyran’s and River’s love story plays out in the background as the Reapers fight their enemies, try to right ancient wrongs, and keep the human world safe. I’m curious to see how this series continues to evolve and how the overlap with the Dark Kings will work, especially with characters like Rhi who appear to have key roles in both series.
Summary:
There’s no escaping a Reaper. I’m an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I’m coming for you…
I’m a warrior. My unbreakable determination, my backbone of steel define me. As a Reaper who does Death’s bidding, weakness is a word I don’t understand. Until a stunning librarian stirs emotions deep within me I’ve never felt before. Her soft curves blunt the sharp edges of my soul, crushing my defenses – yet make me stronger. But underneath those wide eyes and fierce femininity, she has a weapon, one she won’t hesitate to use. And when the Dark begin their deadly descent, we’ll need each other’s love and protection…or risk fracturing apart.
