Sandy M’s review of Slade (Shadow Wranglers, Book 4) by Sarah McCarty
Paranormal Romance published by Berkley 6 Dec 11
This is one of those series that I really liked with each new release, and then…well, I just got behind when it came to the last book. I kept saying I was going to get to it soon, and soon never seem to come. Until recently. Especially when I realized how long it actually took to get to soon. But doesn’t matter if I’d read it back when or now, I still love these Johnson brothers and the women who test and finally love them.
Jane is the geeky and brilliant scientist whose latest formula could save lives – which is her intention – as well as end lives. That’s why monsters she can’t believe are real are after her. Slade is keeping her one step ahead of them, he needs her in more ways than one – she’s his mate and her formula may be the answer to saving his nephew’s life. I really like the beginning of this story, lots of humor when Slade and Jane finally meet and then plenty of action as they run for their lives when the dawn is creeping up on them. At first Jane irritated me a bit, vacillating between stubbornness and indecision. But when you’re being chased by those monsters, you tend to not know which way is up sometimes.
Slade has his work cut out for himself too. He has to convince Jane she’s his mate and help her refine her formula before it’s too late for Joseph. The scenes with Joseph and his parents are so tender and emotional, and Jane finds herself working even harder for a solution after she meets the young vampire. I still enjoy the relationship between the brothers, looking out for one another no matter the situation.
Jane eventually grew on me, getting used to her needing to be independent, no man required, even a vampire. Of course, Slade loves her that way. Interesting take on the allergic reaction Jane experiences in certain instances with Slade. The ending is left hanging a bit, making it sound as though there will be more books, but since it’s been four years since this one, that may not happen. I hope it does, though. I’d love to eventually have Tobias’ story. He’s my favorite secondary character, and I really like those shifters just as much as the vampires.
