Veena’s review of At The Count’s Bidding by Caitlin Crews
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin Presents 17 Feb 15
My son once told me that a movie trailer showcases all the best scenes in a movie. That statement holds true for this book where the back cover is all the story there is. The rest is just scenes of passion that complete the book. The end is what makes the book worth reading as Giancarlo finally hears what Paige is telling him and asks the questions that he should have asked ten years ago…
His mother is a well-known Hollywood star who has always had a hard time separating her various roles from the role of mother to her son. So when his girlfriend, an aspiring actress/dancer on a movie he is directing, hangs him out to dry – literally – he thinks the worst of her and disappears from the scene. Now ten years later she’s back, but he’s definitely going to direct this interlude his way.
As their passion blazes under the beautiful stars of Tuscany, he has a few twinges about what he’s doing to her, but before he can move closer to her the bombshell of her pregnancy pulls him up short. Giancarlo just does not appeal to me as a character. I think his reactions to Paige extreme and completely selfish and self-centered. He does redeem himself when he finally comes to realize all that he has lost by his actions and sets out to win her back.
I believe I’ve said before that I love Harlequin Presents because they give me a nice break in the middle of everything I have going on. This one, though, doesn’t have any story at all, except that it does have a well-written ending. I admire Paige for finally finding her gumption and speaking home truths to Giancarlo, which, to his credit, he finally listens and acts on. I’m actually giving this story a slightly higher rating just because of the last few chapters.
Grade: C
