Veena’s review of In His Keeping (Slow Burn, Book 2) by Maya Banks
Romantic Suspense/Paranormal Romance published by Avon Books 27 Jan 15
Ms. Banks definitely steps up the intensity in this the second book in her Slow Burn series. Ari is a strong telekinetic who’s been kept in a protective cocoon all her life, but, thanks to cell phones and social media, her secrets go viral when she’s forced to use her powers in public to protect herself.
If that isn’t disaster enough, her parents disappear and her father’s security team starts acting strange. Her only recourse is to keep a low profile and reach out to the Deveraux brothers for help. Fortunately for her Beau Deveraux is willing to use all his considerable resources to protect her, even from his own family if it be necessary.
The truth as it emerges is definitely stranger than fiction and will keep the reader fascinated and on edge. Ms. Banks has long been a favorite author and it’s been painful to find some of her recent stories lacking her usual edge. With this one it definitely seems like she’s found her groove again. The intensity of the emotions, both between the siblings as well as the two protagonists, captures the reader and sucks them right into the story.
This series is definitely a keeper and I can’t wait for the next one in the series. I stayed at the edge of my seat with the unfolding story, and in this instance I was reassured that there would be a happy ending because the outlook seemed pretty bleak at times.
Grade: A
Summary:
Maya continues her suspenseful and steamy Slow Burn series with this second book—a twisting tale featuring a strong yet vulnerable heroine in danger and the sexy alpha hero who must save her.
Abandoned as a baby to a young wealthy couple and raised in a world of privilege, Arial has no hint of her past or who she belonged to. Her only link lies in the one thing that sets her apart from everyone else—telekinetic powers. Protected by her adoptive parents and hidden from the public to keep her gift secret, Ari is raised in the lap of luxury, and isolation. That is, until someone begins threatening her life.
Beau Devereaux is no stranger to the strange. As the head of Deveraux Security, he’s more than familiar with the realities of physic powers. So when a family friend approaches him about protecting his daughter, he’s more than ready to jump on board. What Beau isn’t prepared for is the extent of his attraction to his beautiful and powerful client. What began as a simple assignment, just another job, quickly turns personal as Beau discovers he’ll do anything at all to protect Ari. Even if it costs him his life.
