Veena’s review of Thrill Me (Fool’s Gold, Book 18) by Susan Mallery
Contemporary Romance published by HQN Books 01 Aug 15
Maya Farlow reconnected with Fool’s Gold in the last romance featuring her best friend Phoebe and her stepbrother Zane, and now she’s back working for Mayor Marsha in promoting the town as the destination for romance. The mayor, as we know, is omnipotent as is evidenced in her pairing Maya with Del Mitchell, Maya’s one-time heartthrob, giving them a second chance at love. This story follows the formula for Fool’s Gold HEAs in the ebb and flow of the romance, aided and abetted by the various activities that occur around town, especially the girls who all hang together and are there for each other, when the inevitable happens and the hero turns stupid…
Heartbroken by Maya’s rejection, Del left town and became famous in extreme sports. He’s had one other relationship, but nothing of the intensity of his feelings for Maya. Knowing he can’t go down that road again, he’s determined to maintain a professional relationship with her as they work together on a town project.
Maya, on the other hand, knows what she threw away when she let her fear take over and made her jilt Del in a very hurtful way. Understanding that life rarely offers second chances, she’s content to work closely with him and take whatever crumbs come her way. In the meantime, she’s very close to Del’s mother and she’s keeping secrets from him which are surely going to blow up in her face one day in the not-too-distant future.
Del and Maya work closely together and inevitably succumb to the chemistry that is sparking between them. Can they figure out a way to forgive and forget and carve out a future for themselves? Since this is a romance, the conclusion is as inevitable as their chemistry, but it’s the journey which makes the story interesting.
We’ve met the five really handsome and damaged Mitchell brothers. Del is taken and there are four more. All that darkness will definitely make for some great romance for the future. As formulaic as these stories are, I still enjoy the rhythm of the story, reconnecting with old friends, and being a part of the happy ending, so please keep them coming.
Grade: B
Summary:
Meet the Mitchell brothers of Fool’s Gold, California—five gorgeous men who’ve left a trail of broken hearts in their wake…
Maya Farlow learned the hard way to depend only on herself, so when she fell too deeply for the bad-boy charms of Del Mitchell, she did the only thing she could—she ran. Stunned, Del left Fool’s Gold to make his name and fortune in extreme sports.
Now ten years later, Maya’s been hired to promote her hometown’s new slogan, The Destination for Romance. The celebrity spokesman is none other than Del, the man she dumped but never forgot. Awkward!
Although Del’s not the type to hold a grudge, he’s determined to avoid falling a second time for the woman who broke his heart. He’s a daredevil, not an idiot. Trouble is, in all his adventures, he never found a rush as exhilarating as Maya’s kiss. Maybe risking his heart will prove to be the biggest thrill of all…
