Veena’s review of Cherry Lane (A Cavanaugh Island, Book 5) by Rochelle Alers
Contemporary Romance published by Forever Yours 26 May 15

This is my first story by Rochelle Alers in a series that’s already five deep in couples. Cavanaugh Island sounds like a beautiful place in the deep south with a lot of wonderful insights into local food and culture. What seems to be a fairly simple story about two people who feel an instant connection from their first meeting has layers of possibilities, including threats of violence that elevate the story out of the norm and make it one that I definitely enjoyed and trust that you will too.

Devon is struggling with the fact that she’s pregnant and alone with a mere handful of friends when she visits Cavanaugh Island. Not only does she meet and connect instantly with David, but she also becomes pulled into a circle of friends who are destined to become closer than family.  For the first time she’s able to connect with a group of women over their regular Monday get-together and what happens over lunch stays at lunch, and these ladies are destined to quickly become the sisters of her heart.

It is so sad when family puts more store into what outsiders think and feel rather than being there for their own, when they disown Devon for becoming an unwed mother.  In contrast, David not only steps up to the plate to be a true father to her unborn baby, but people whom she’s barely known quickly become the family that she’s always craved.

David feels that instant spark of attraction, but he also sees beyond that to the long-term synergies of complementing their skills to do good for the community as a whole.  I love to see their relationship develop into intimacy to where David is signing up to be a father, when days ago he had no plans for a family.  Devon is definitely gun shy, particularly since she’s been disappointed not only by her boyfriend, who’s been cheating on her, but by her own family who put more stock on their social position than their family. Can David win her over and keep her safe from the storms that threaten to take her down?

A great new addition to my personal library of authors. So many books to read, not enough time to read them all. Sigh!

Grade:  A

Summary:

A place to call home . . .

In New York City, attorney Devon Gilmore devoted all her time and energy to fast-track her career. She lost her boyfriend . . . but found herself with a surprise baby on the way. To begin a new life, Devon needs a place to settle down-a place like Cavanaugh Island, where the pace is slow, the weather is fine, and the men are even finer.

From the moment David Sullivan meets Devon, he knows he can’t fight the laws of attraction. Whether it’s helping fix up the old cottage she just bought on Cherry Lane or working together on a pro bono legal case, he can’t help feeling a little protective. But will the most eligible bachelor in town be ready for an instant family? Only if he can convince Devon to put her heart on the line one more time-for all time.
