Lately I’ve come across several books that are very dark in nature. While I enjoy a good story that I can sink my teeth into, I read romances for the escape they offer from day-to-day reality. Don’t get me wrong, because this is definitely a love story and it does have a happily ever after, yet the path to true romance is very dark and torturous, featuring a serial killer and rapist who’s out to get our heroine and definitely doesn’t care who he destroys along the way.
Caleb first meets Ramie after his sister is kidnapped. Ramie has assisted the police in difficult cases before using her psychic gifts. He tracks her down where she’s in hiding and brow beats her into helping him. When he sees the agony that Ramie suffers as she connects with the victim and sees the crime scene through the victim’s eyes, he’s sorry for what he’s put her through. Elated at recovering his sister, he makes Ramie an unconditional offer of help at any time at any cost.
Ramie has no intentions of seeking out Caleb ever again, but in the process of locating his sister, she’s forged a psychic connection with the killer. On the run, out of all options, she reaches out to Caleb and he comes through for her, whisks her away in the face of the killer. Now the killer has two targets to focus on Caleb and Ramie.
Despite his family’s feelings in the matter, Caleb brings Ramie home as he tries to gain her trust. How the psychopath who has Ramie in his sights finds a way to abuse the trust and use Caleb as his instrument is very horrifically creative. I have to warn readers that this story reads like an episode of Criminal Minds or CSI. If you enjoy that intensity, then you will enjoy this psychological thriller. The one thing that remains constant is the sexual intensity between our protagonists, which is signature Maya Banks.
