Veena’s review of Midnight Secrets (Midnight Series, Book 6) by Lisa Marie Rice
Romantic Suspense published by Carina Press 08 Jun 15

Lately Ms. Rice’s stories have been a mixed bag for me, but this one definitely hits the right spot in both in romance and  suspense.  Joe Harris is a typical strong-and-silent Rice male protagonist. He might be great with girls, but when it really counts he can’t unstick his tongue from his mouth long enough to make conversation with his next door neighbor.  This is a fast-paced interesting story with enough suspense and chills to keep the adrenaline pumping through out.

The entire team is accounted for and present, including the newest members whose stories we’ve recently read.  From the get-go Joe is not only floored by his beautiful neighbor, but she rouses all his protective instincts that have him following her when she sets out of her house to shadow and protect from a distance, as well as getting up close and personal in helping her with the honey-dos around her house.  In return she cooks him the most fabulous meals that she leaves at his front door for him and his friends to enjoy.

It takes his friend Sean’s fiancé Felicity all of a few seconds to figure out that the beautiful, haunted woman next door is Isabel Delvaux, part of the charismatic first family in the USA who were massacred in a rally when her father announced his bid for President. Pretty soon it’s apparent that Isabel’s life is in danger, and the entire team takes on the job of hunting down and neutralizing the threat against Isabel.

I really enjoyed the camaraderie between the team as they mobilize to respond to the threat against Isabel while working on coaxing her out of her shell to pick up the threads of her life again. The story takes off at a good clip as we simultaneously look into the workings of the mind of the man who is the master mind behind the plot to assassinate Isabel’s family, his minion who’s been hired to keep an eye on Isabel to ensure that she remains downtrodden and toothless, and the Midnight team as they plan to hunt down and neutralize the terrorists.

I absolutely love the ending and the cute but effective marriage proposal.  Way to go, Isabel!!

Grade: B

Summary:

Former navy SEAL Joe Harris nearly died—twice—on a medevac helo after being blown up by an IED. He’s not moving too great these days, but if there was ever a woman designed to jump-start a man’s hormones, it would be his new neighbor.

Meeting Isabel—loving Isabel—brought Joe back to life.

Isabel Delvaux came from one of America’s foremost political dynasties, until the greatest terrorist attack since 9/11 killed her entire family. She barely survived the Washington Massacre, only to become prey for rabid reporters. Fleeing to Portland and changing her name was a way out, a way to start over. The only way.

She knows she’s safe with Joe Harris. Not just because he’s big and strong, not just because he’s part of a security team that obliterates threats on the regular, but because he’s been to the abyss and back.

But as they help each other heal—through talk, through touch, through spectacular sex—the past comes back to play. When Isabel’s memory starts to return and a mysterious stranger sends Joe emails indicating Isabel is in imminent danger, he’ll do anything to help her uncover the truth. Even if that truth is the most terrifying thing of all…
