Veena’s review of Too Dangerous for a Lady (Company of Rogues, Book 16) by Jo Beverley
Regency Romance published by Signet 07 Apr 15

I’ve enjoyed the novels featuring the Company of the Rogues, though this one is so loosely connected that it almost feels fabricated. It was good, though, to catch up with a few of the rogues as they play their part in bringing their wealth and influence into the endgame.

Hermione, who has always craved adventure, has been forced to live a life of genteel poverty with her sister’s family. When a journey to a dying relative with a chance of a modest inheritance unwitting place her in the eye of danger, Hermione is forced to contemplate how adventurous she truly might be.

The danger comes to her bundled with the possibility of romance when she gives shelter to a young gentleman in her room at the coaching inn where she is spending the night. He brings back the memories of her first ball and her almost first kiss from a nobleman who was shipping out to war.  Now he seems to be down on his luck and a thief.

Unbeknownst to her to who he is now, Viscount Faringay is undercover, embedded with a group of anarchists who seek to topple the monarchy and aristocracy. His theft of top-secret documents from the revolutionaries place not just him in danger but also Hermione.  Now he’s forced to balance the needs of his country with his desire to protect the young woman who is fast becoming the most important person in his life, especially when, despite all his warnings, Hermione comes to London along with her sick but recovering uncle.

As Thayne hides out in plain sight as his rightful titled persona, Hermione comes under the protection of Nicholas Delaney and the rogues, particularly the Duke and Duchess of Belcraven. The suspense plays out as the revolutionaries advance their plans and aim their gun sights on Thayne and Hermione.

I enjoyed the historical facts that are an integral part of the story, as well as the suspense and romance as it plays out.

Grade: B

Summary:

Lady Hermione Merryhew, daughter of an impoverished marquess, already has her share of problems. The last thing she needs is an intruder in her bedroom, especially not a fugitive thief. She should scream, but the shabby rascal is a man from her past.

Six years ago, at her first ball, dashing Lieutenant Mark Thayne failed to steal a kiss, but succeeded in stealing a little of her heart. She’s older and wiser now. She can’t toss him to the wolves. Besides, she wants that kiss.

Now Viscount Faringay, Mark has never forgotten Lady Hermione, but he mustn’t involve her in his dangerous life. He’s infiltrated the Crimson Band, violent revolutionaries who plan a bloodbath in London, and if he survives the night he will be able to destroy them. Hermione is involved, however, and only he can protect her.
