Veena’s review of A Deadly Web (Bishop Files, Book 2) by Kay Hooper
Paranormal Romance published by Jove Books 07 Apr 15
I have been a fan of Ms. Hooper since the time she wrote unforgettable love stories for Loveswept. I have continued to be a fan even as the stories took on more of a dark thriller aspect. This one, however, is so cryptic that it left me at a loss with regard to how I should classify the story. No doubt this plot will eventually reveal itself in all its evil glory, but, until then, it left me quite disappointed.

Tasha Solomon is a psychic. Sensing danger around her, she uproots herself and moves to a new town and a fully secure building, only to find that it can be breached at the drop of a hat. In the meantime, psychics are disappearing and, along with a special group of which John Brodie is a part, Noah Bishop and his wife Miranda are also on the hunt.
As the story unfolds and John takes on the role of guardian to Tasha, forging a strong connection with her, it is unclear even until the end of the story whether this connection is romantic or familial. It is clear that there is strong evil afoot and it’s hunting and torturing psychics and there is a group of protectors that are trying to find and keep the psychics safe, but, other than that, the entire story seems to be a series of incidents with Tasha and John at the heart of it.
There are other characters who come in and out on the stage, one of whom seems to have an inside track with the leader of the opposition. Then there is the psychic child who finds her way to Sarah and Tucker Mackenzie, and who, along with a cat, seem to have some purpose and role to play perhaps in a future series.
Overall I find this book disappointing. The story is disjointed with a lot of different plot lines and threads that can be pulled together perhaps in future books. I understand setting up a new series and needing to lay a foundational background, but this one just left me wanting…

Summary:
John Brodie is a Guardian, a member of a secret network devoted to protecting the psychics in his charge from a ruthless—and virtually invisible—enemy.
Tasha Solomon is unaware of the Guardians’ existence—until the night the gifted psychic suffers a shocking and violent attack and Brodie saves her life.
Tough and resilient, Tasha isn’t used to depending on anyone. But the assault has left her vulnerable. Tasha doesn’t know who wants her dead, or why, or when he will strike again. Now, she is forced to trust that Brodie can guide her through a tangled web of danger and deception toward a safe harbor—one she fears is more elusive with each dark and endless night.
