Veena’s review of Vampire Trouble (Dead In The City, Book 2) by Sara Humphreys
Paranormal Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 01 Jul 14
This is my first by Sara Humphreys in this series. It came during a time when I was seeking to step outside my box to expand my reading horizon. Interesting as this tale is, with its mix of gypsies and magic, vampires, and werewolves, it just does not make me a fan. I suppose that’s why I forgot all about raving or ranting about it on the site for so long.
Shane Quesada’s name conjures up all sorts of sleepy, sexy fantasies. He definitely is a hunk and definitely stirs my imagination, as he does for Maya and her friends. Not only does he have the old-fashioned courtesy bred into him from centuries of living, but he’s a modern man with all that empathy and belief in equality. Why can’t we find some of these devastatingly handsome men in real life?
Anyhow, Maya is all kinds of brat. She has no memories before becoming vampire, but she’s not going to conform and follow the rules. So when Rat comes calling, she responds and before long she’s in all kinds of trouble from which Shane has to rescue her. If that isn’t bad enough, it seems that her past is coming to haunt her present, so she’s going to need some help quickly uncovering the fog that surrounds her mind. What she finds is astounding. This is definitely not the time for Shane to discover a conscience and walk away from her.
There are some great elements in the book. The vampire club is a pretty great piece of imagination. The wolves and Maya’s power over them is quite interesting. As I look back, the book has it all – hot romance, mystery, action. So why don’t I like it more? For me, relating to the characters plays as large a part in enjoying a book as the story. Maya is a spoiled brat, determined to look for trouble. I just don’t care for her. but then when I started warming up to her, Shane does a one-eighty and develops an attitude, determined to walk away from Maya for her own good, regardless of what she truly needs. Doesn’t sound like true love to me. It turns out he’s scared that his attention is on her and not on his environment when he’s around her, so, of course, he’s got to walk away from her and leave her unprotected. Please save me from all these sanctimonious idiots.
