Veena’s review of The Devil of Clan Sinclair by Karen Ranney
Historical Romance published by Avon 30 Jul 13
The newly widowed Virginia Traylor, Countess of Barrett, is desperate. Her husband has squandered her considerable fortune and what is left of the estate is entailed and will go to the next in line to inherit, since there are no children from their union. In order to save her family, which consists of her mother-in-law and her sisters-in-law, she reaches out to the only person who can help her – Macrath Sinclair, a self-made Scottish millionaire, the man she loved and hoped to marry before her father forced her to marry a title. If she can get pregnant with Macrath’s son, she can save her husband’s estates and keep the roof over all their heads.
Macrath Sinclair is an inventor, which has made him his millions. He wants to found a dynasty by creating his own clan. With that in mind, he finds his perfect wife in Virginia and then builds a perfect house on an estate that will become Clan Sinclair. All his plans come to fruition, but his dream to marry Virginia is doomed when she is forced by her father to marry an English nobleman with a title. He retires to his Scottish estate with his dreams and continues to invent, until one day out of the blue Virginia shows up in his life again.
They’ve both always loved each other, so it’s not difficult for them to slip right back into a relationship which they consummate, and, before you know it, Virginia’s pregnant. Having gotten what she wants, she returns to England where she gives birth to a son and is able to hold on to her husband’s estates. It’s definitely not pretty when Mcgrath finds out that he’s been used and he’s a father to boot. He promptly steals his son back and refuses to give Virginia access to the baby.
Now begins a battle of wills between two formidable adversaries. There are other external elements at play as well. Her deceased husband’s valet is a villain determined to possess Virginia and her estates. The story has a pretty novel concept, what with the marriage to someone else and then the baby deception. Can these two find their way back together and really enjoy the love and happiness they should finally have? Well, you’ll have to read their story to find out.
The supporting characters in the story are well fleshed out, have great personalities, and add the to the overall enjoyment of the story. Most of all, I love the whole story of inventing refrigeration and winning the wager by using that refrigeration. I understand from the author’s website that this invention was the inspiration for the whole story. Hmmm, if that was it, then it came pretty late in the game.

For her husband deliberately spent the money intended for Virginia and her in-laws, leaving them penniless—unless she produces an heir. Desperate and confused, Virginia embarks on a fateful journey that brings her to the doorstep of the only man she’s ever loved. He’s known as The Devil, but Macrath Sinclair doesn’t care. He moved to a tiny Scottish village in hopes of continuing his work as an inventor and starting a family of his own. He bought the house; he chose the woman. Unfortunately, Virginia didn’t choose him. Macrath knows he should turn her away now, but she needs him, and he wants her more than ever.
