I’m ready to relocate to Fool’s Gold, the fictional town in Northern California which is the subject of this delightful series from author Susan Mallery. I probably read the first few books in the series and then stopped. No specific reason. I just hadn’t realized that the series kept on going, adding delightful new characters. I am glad to get back to Fool’s Gold and meet all those charming characters who have always lived there or have moved there in search of the wonderful small-town Americana that they’ve missed all their lives.
Patience McGraw is actually a native of Fool’s Gold. She’s been married, divorced, and is a mother. She dreams of one day being able to open a coffee shop on the main street, and if she has any twinges of memory of Justice McGarret, her childhood sweetheart who had disappeared, she knows how to keep her thoughts and dreams inside her, until the man himself shows up right there in town, alive and well.
Justice had been in witness protection and been relocated suddenly by the US Marshalls who were guarding him. He has since served his country, during which he has witnessed unspeakable things. But that’s all in the past and now he’s finally ready to put down roots. So where else would he come but to the one town and the one woman who represent home in his mind.
In this sweet love story he reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, faces down demons from his past, and achieves all that he’s ever sought. The story is everything you expect from a Harlequin romance. What adds that extra bit of flair is the author and her insights into human psyche. I enjoyed this very much and am determined to keep reading the new stories from Fool’s Gold, as well as also find the backlist that I missed and read them again.
