Book CoverDinca’s review of A Precious Inheritance by Paula Roe
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin Desire 2 Oct 12

There is a lot of passion between the pages and linen sheets of this book.  It is very enjoyable to read about the rich people having passion for something other than what comes with a life of wealth.  The back story is alive with the characters having personalities of their own so that you also enjoy reading about then and they’re not just used as filler.

Vanessa Partridge is her own woman, even if it means being a disappointment to her family and making a few mistakes along the way.  The one thing she can do right is try to get a legacy for her twin daughters. Only that seems to have slipped through her fingers, just as their deceased father has. The overwhelming feeling of loss is tangible when she is outbid by Chase Harrington – those manuscripts should have been her children’s inheritance and not in some rich, greedy collector’s vault. Then of all things, she is accosted by the man and accused of trying to inflate the bidding. Their sizzling attraction is palpable, even if it is impossible.

The animosity Chase Harrington has for the society his wealth has propelled him into is so thick you can feel it, like a heavy fog stifling the air around you.  I feel his labored efforts as he navigates the elite world.  Then I can feel the tension dispels when he leaves the city to visit with Sam and Mitch at the ranch where they live.  Discovery of how he comes to terms with the past and the present is very enlightening. Even with his unique ability, I do not get the superiority air from him toward others. Finally a hero with a major inferiority complex.  I fell in love with him too.

This author can really make you feel what is going on – she doesn’t just tell you about it. She really has that skill down to the very end. When Chase accosts her at the auction is the first time I had the feeling of being in the story, not just reading about it. The feelings wrapped up in the back story are very real and believable as well. My heart goes out to Sam and the thoughtfulness of Chase to get him something he doesn’t know is attainable.

This is the first I have read of Paula Roe, and she is now added to my list of favorites. I will be looking for more works by her in the future. I discovered only one typo, it made me reread a couple of sentences. Nobody is perfect, but when I have to reread something to make it work, it is bothersome.

No matter how perfect it seems, no one’s life is perfect regardless of their background or financial status. This story is a good indication of how people are misread all the time in life on a daily basis. The only thing I wish could be rewritten is about the recovery of the manuscript. I feel that should have had more importance than it got in the end.
