Sam Robertson doesn’t know what hit him. He walks into his kitchen and his mother informs him he has a child, Becky, and she is deaf. Before he gets a grip on the situation, it suddenly changes again. He has unwanted company in the form of his daughter’s aunt. When his mother falls and has to be rushed to the hospital, he is stuck with allowing the aunt to babysit his daughter. It’s a funny scene the way he made sure she could not take off with Becky.
Kayla Ward just wants to get her niece and go back to Chicago. With all she knows about Sam, his ranch is no place for Becky. The one time Kayla had been here before was to help her sister get away from the brute.
When Kayla finds out he has a court date to gain custody, she insists on going with him. Since she is skilled in communicating with Becky, she is so sure she has all the rights and should be the one Becky lives with. Only the judge is not friendly to either of them. He rules they are to have joint custody for six long weeks before he will give his final decision. During this get-acquainted time, Kayla finds Sam is not quite the monster her sister made him out to be.
Having a sign language teacher in the home would be a lot easier to swallow if Sam didn’t want to jump Kayla’s bones every time he found himself in the same room with her. He gets a book from the library and tries to learn on his own to no avail. Having her teach him seems the logical way, and she is wiling. But Sam finds keeping his hands off her and on the sign language is not an easy lesson.
If you have some time you will want to pick up this one. Barbara White-Rayczek does a wonderful job on the story line. It’s the same as many but yet it has a different twist along the way.
Grade: A
Summary: Sam Robertson’s life just changed. In one short day, he found out that he’s a daddy; that his beautiful little girl, Becky, is deaf; and that her aunt, sign language teacher Kayla Ward, intends to fight him for custody.
There are plenty of reasons Sam shouldn’t fall for Kayla. A city girl like her has no place on his ranch, particularly when she’s his ex-wife’s gorgeous sister. But thanks to the judge’s orders, Sam’s spending a lot of time with Kayla, trying to give Becky the stable home she’s never known.
Despite their ongoing custody battle, Sam and Kayla’s love for Becky brings them closer than they ever expected, and Sam knows that no matter who wins in court, he could still lose—Kayla or his daughter.
