C2’s review of Dragon Bound (Elder Races, Book 1) by Thea Harrison
Paranormal Romance released by Berkley 3 May 11
Oh, faithful reader, is there a better feeling in the world than finding a new-to-you author with an awesome series starter? I say NO! And that is exactly what I found in Thea Harrison’s Dragon Bound.
In the world Ms. Harrison introduces us to in Dragon Bound, we find that humans live side by side with, and are aware of, the Elder Races – shape-shifters of all sorts (the Wyr), the Fae (light and dark courts, of course), elves and countless others. There are those who insist that such creatures don’t exist, but every world has its crazies.
Pia Giovanni is a half-Wyr. She has done her best to live under the radar of other wyrkind and just wants to live her life and be left alone. And she has mostly managed to do just that until her ex-boyfriend blackmails her into stealing something…something from one of the most dangerous creatures in existence.
Dragos Ceulebre is the leader of the Wyr. He is a fearsome, powerful creature – whether in human form or in his other form. Dragos, as you might have guessed, is a dragon. And dragons are very, very protective of their hoards, so when he learns that someone has managed not only to find his stash but has actually stolen from him? He. Is. Not. Happy.
Still, when he learns what was taken from him and reads the note left by the thief, Dragos is intrigued and determined to find the thief – both to see how his hoard was found and why that particular object was stolen. Dragos manages to connect with Pia via a dream and tracks her down after he “sees” where she is.
And we’re off, faithful reader! Through battles and imprisonment, rescues and escapes – the world Ms. Harrison is building gets more and more interesting. We meet various members of the Elder Races and get to know a bit about the politics and relationships involved.
And all along the way we have a fabulous romance between Pia – who does her best to not be completely bowled over by this amazing creature she’s with – and Dragos – who does his best to keep his alpha tendencies (because, honestly, what could be more alpha than a dragon?!) under control as he learns how to be in a relationship with a modern woman.
I know I haven’t given much of a summary of the happenings (this isn’t a book report, people!). All I can say is Dragon Bound was one big smile from beginning to end. If you only try one new series this year, try this one. You won’t be sorry!
Summary:
Half-human and half-wyr, Pia Giovanni spent her life keeping a low profile among the wyrkind and avoiding the continuing conflict between them and their Dark Fae enemies. But after being blackmailed into stealing a coin from the hoard of a dragon, Pia finds herself targeted by one of the most powerful–and passionate—of the Elder Races. As the most feared and respected of the wyrkind, Dragos Cuelebre cannot believe someone had the audacity to steal from him, much less succeed. And when he catches the thief, Dragos spares her life, claiming her as his own to further explore the desire they’ve ignited in one another.
