Ash’s review of The Edge of Night by Jill Sorenson
Romantic Suspense published by Dell 05 Apr 11
This book is a bit different from what I am used to. The romantic suspense books I read are usually about military heroes with lots of action. This is the first time I’ve read one featuring a patrol officer. It’s just not my thing, but I am glad I decided to give it a try.
April and Noah are our main couple, and I like them well enough. They have huge obstacles in their way, and right up until the end I wondered how they would overcome them. The relationship, the emotions, the problems, they all feel realistic. I think I would have liked more romance and more scenes with the two of them. A lot of time is spent focused on other things and not them. At the end of the book, I feel like I don’t know them as well as I should. Still, I did truly enjoy every part of this book. I’m not sure it would have worked if there’s more focus on them. So while I do wish there’s more of them as a couple, I don’t think any of the other stuff should be taken away.
Something I tend to do a lot with romance book is I get more interested in secondary couples, which is what happened here. There is another romance going on with Noah’s nineteen-year-old sister, Meghan, and a gang member, Eric. They have a sort of Romeo and Juliet thing going on and every time they aren’t on the page, I wish they were. Their relationship is heartbreaking, and I want so badly for them to get their happily ever after. I read on Jill Sorenson’s site that they might get their own book, and I really, really, really want them to. I’m disappointed that there’s no book already to look forward to.
The murder case fits in nicely. Everything kind of revolves around it, but it doesn’t take over the book. I could easily picture this as a movie or TV show, the way it all comes together perfectly. I definitely have to go see what other books Jill Sorenson has out now.

Summary:
In a sultry California city on the Mexican border, a brutal crime pushes a struggling young mother and an idealistic cop to the edge of passion—and beyond.
To support her small daughter, April Ortiz does what she has to do—which means waiting tables in a skimpy outfit at a popular nightclub in a gang-infested area of Chula Vista. When one of her co-workers is raped and murdered, April does what she knows she shouldn’t—she defies the neighborhood code by giving the police a hardcore gang member’s name.
Clean-cut cop Noah Young wants a shot at breaking this case more than anything in the world—that is, until he meets the unforgettable April Ortiz. When April gives Noah the tip, a spark ignites. As the fire between them threatens to blaze out of control, the two are dragged down further into the dark mysteries of the graffiti-lined streets, taunted by a crazed killer who could strike again at any time.
