Book CoverAsh’s review of Three Days to Dead (Dreg City Series Book 1) by Kelly Meding
Urban Fantasy released by Dell 24 NOV 2009

I read Three Days to Dead in about four hours because it was just that good. I’m almost glad I waited to read it, only because now I can read the next book without having to wait.

Three Days to Dead starts different from most other books, our heroine Evy has already died and in a pretty gruesome way. She, of course, has changed, mentally as well as physically.

I like who Evy is now, and I get the feeling that I wouldn’t like who she used to be quite as much. My only complaint is that it is still unclear how much, if any, of Chalice’s personality has transferred to her. It almost made it seem like her feelings towards Wyatt aren’t actually real, which I didn’t like. I want them to be together, but I want it to be Evy who wants it. Their relationship is a huge part of the story. Wyatt is someone I hope is there until the end.

Kelly Meding has shown she isn’t afraid of breaking her readers’ hearts. Not that I am complaining, I don’t expect everyone to get a happy ending in this genre. There are some characters who we get to know and like who don’t make it. Actually, a lot of people seem to die or get injured, but it all makes sense. I never felt like people were dying or things were blowing up just to add in some more action scenes.

The world Evy lives in has vampires, weres, goblins, gnomes, fey, and a bunch of other creatures. Some are good, but most are bad. Kelly Meding has created a world that is different but familiar enough to keep from confusing readers. She has put her own unique twist on beings we already know, and she has done it pretty well.

The next book starts off right after this one ends, and I can’t wait to get started on it.

Summary:

She’s young, deadly, and hunted—with only three days to solve her own murder…

When Evangeline Stone wakes up naked and bruised on a cold slab at the morgue – in a stranger’s body, with no memory of who she is and how she got there – her troubles are only just beginning.  Before that night, she and the other two members of her Triad were star bounty hunters — mercilessly cleansing the city of the murderous creatures living in the shadows, from vampires to shape-shifters to trolls. Then something terrible happened that not only cost all three of them their lives, but also convinced the city’s other Hunters that Evy was a traitor . . . and she can’t even remember what it was.

Now she’s a fugitive, piecing together her memory, trying to deal some serious justice – and discovering that she has only three days to solve her own murder before the reincarnation spell wears off. Because in three days, Evy will die again – but this time, there’s no second chance…
