Deals with Demons has everything I want in a story — a sexy demon who I’d want for myself and a strong kick-ass heroine.
Talia and Devlin already have a past, so there was no awkward first meeting to get through. It has been years since Talia has seen Devlin. She left him when she was 19 thinking he had been cruel to her. Devlin, on the other hand, thinks she left because he had scared her. It is one of those big misunderstandings that are usually annoying, but in this story it works.
As soon as they meet up again, the sparks fly. Devlin is back to help Talia kill the demon who murdered her family. She doesn’t believe he will do anything for free, so he offers a deal. One night in his bed and he will help kill the demon. She takes the deal, and she doesn’t try to deny the fact that she wants to be with him again.
Talia is smart and I really enjoyed reading from her point of view. She doesn’t let her pride stand in her way, and she doesn’t fight her attraction to Devlin. She is a heroine who is a breath of fresh air. I wish all female leads could be like her — strong, confident, and not afraid to show weakness to people who matter.
Devlin is the perfect person for her. He is a demon and a powerful one. He is charming when he should be, sexy all the time, and he doesn’t try to hide anything from Talia. He has a soft spot saved for her, and I only wish for their sake that he had followed her when she left.
The demon who is after Talia also has a presence in the story. He felt evil and he does bad things. He is after Talia and she can admit she is scared. The fight with him adds just the right amount of action.
Deals with Demons flows so smoothly it didn’t feel at all like a short story. Victoria Davies packed so much into it, I felt like I had read a full-length book. I would love to read more by her.
