Linda Howard has a reader letter up at Borders on her new Nocturne:
Raintree: Inferno
Dear Reader:
About five years ago, give or take a few months, my friends Beverly Barton and Linda Winstead Jones and I came up with the idea of writing a trilogy together. We could have made it easy on ourselves by sticking to straight romance or romantic suspense, but, no – we had to complicate things.
No new info here but it is always nice to see something from the author online.
Love the cover for Howard’s book. Shame the content didn’t live up to it.
I read this yesterday too. I don’t know if it would have made a difference knowing that the first and second books were going to end abruptly in advance or not. I figured out while reading the excerpt for the next book that the stories were taking place simultaneously, I just don’t know how they are going to wind it all up and tell a third story in the last book.
While I agree that there is some world building in the first book, there’s hardly any story and then it ends. I wonder if Ms. Howard was asked to write the letter because of reviews in way of an explanation…think?
After five years, I would have hoped they could come up with a better, tighter, more believable world building than the crap that was thrown together in that book.
You know though the thing that gets me and it could just be my fangrrlself here…
Jo Goodman’s Compass Club all happened at the same time and unless I am not remembering correctly, each book ended. And she was still able to keep the suspense up for most of the books and still tell a complete story.
Well suspense for a Historical Romance of course…
My Brotherhood of Blood series happens within a 2 month window, so most of the stories are happening at the same time. It kinda has to be that way for the last book to have the story I want it to have.
Hmmmm… i know something about a dear reader letter…
;p

Dear Reader letters are instigated by the Borders people. They choose authors to write “dear whatever” letters in hopes of peaking interest for books. At least, that is what I have heard.
I saw the letter in my book. I didn’t pay much attention, tho, because like Jane said, it’s a Borders people thing. Meh.
Although, I didn’t hate this book near as much as Jane (and others) did.
Lots of people had things to say about this book, I can’t wait to finally get around to reading it myself so that I can make up my own mind about it.
Hey Jane, will you be reading the rest of the series?
Nope. I am not interested. I’ve kind of given up on the Nocturne line. It seemed like an exciting idea but most of the books I’ve read are meh. I am now buying blazes. LOL. I have found a few of them i like there.
